Winter Storm Watch again: More heavy snow forecast

Issued by NWS.  Potential for another Blizzard Watch or Warning for Wednesday Morning

It seems like a bad joke but it is true. This developing storm looks a lot like the past storm.  A lot like the last storm!  See the computer models and forecast in the slide show below.  That is everything from the pattern, timing of the day, and maybe not as much snowfall.  Maybe?  Two big differences are the cold air in place thanks to the thick snow pack in place, and the spread of this storm farther north into New York and New England.  That would take the crippling snow across a broader population and we are in unchartered territory.  Remember, we just had record snow this weekend, and the final report for BWI is still under debate.

The developing storm is from yet another El Nino charged storm from the Pacific which hit southern California last weekend.  While we were busy with snow, mudslides were wiping out homes near Los Angeles.  That energy has moved east to pick up moisture from the Gulf Coast and catches up with the northern branch of the jet stream.  Each computer model comes up with more precipitation, making this a forecast that continues to show the potential for more snow.  Liquid precipitation as of this morning's model package:

  • GFS: 1.60"
  • NAM: 1.37"
  • MRF: 1.37 (from last night)

That alone would make for well over a foot of snow.  Yes there is the potential for thunder snow mixed in, and possible blizzard conditions with the strong winds that develop by Wednesday morning.  The blizzard conditions for the last still were just confirmed for Baltimore and southern Maryland. I am going to play it a little conservative, but check out the model images and our snow fall forecast in the slide show below.
