Record low temperature tied this morning, another on the way

Morning weather map shows the extreme conditions across the nation.

It's been a summer without much heat.  Temperatures for July are averaging 3.5F below normal.  That includes high and low temperatures.  This past Sunday was the first time this summer (since June 1) we had hit 90F.  So this morning's temperature at BWI reinforced the fact that something special is happening. Unusual chill continues to grip the our part of the nation.

The low temperature of 58F ties the record set back in 2001.  Not a long standing record, but a record just the same.  It dropped to 47F in nearby York, PA

Tonight's forecast puts us between 53F and 56F, almost guaranteeing to break the old record low of 57F set in 1999.   The normal low for Baltimore is 66F. It should be noted that places in the city and by the Chesapeake Bay may stay 5-10 degrees warmer overnight.

Extremes often breed extremes.

To be fair, the high heat continues in the southern plains and desert southwest.  High temperatures above 100F will continue.  Yesterday, Phoenix recorded a high temperature of 113F.  That was one degree below the record, and 6 degrees above their normal of 107F.
