Hail up to 8 inches deep in Nederland, CO. July 28 2009
An incredible thunderstorm blew through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado on Wednesday before hitting Denver. See people using shovels to dig out their cars in the video below. The Eldora Ski Area in Nederland looked like it should be open for business as seen in helicopter views from the local Fox affiliate KDVR. Instead, this was not snow, but up to 8 inches deep of hail stones. No damage was reported in the greater Boulder area, but heavy rain did lead to some mudslides. County Road 126 ( Caribou Road), was covered in thick mud and large rocks, likely from a minor rockslide, the Boulder Daily Camera reported.
Large hailstones are one thing, but they usually only last for a few minutes. This storm lasted long enough to pile up on the hillsides with elevations of 8,600 feet. It looked like mid winter, and something you might expect in the mountains. However a similar result came last year in a less likely location.
