Snowfall Forecast Updated Saturday Afternoon
Winter Storm Warning for Baltimore: The forecast for this storm in central Maryland was wrong. Plain and simple, the storm has shifted just a little farther north and is dumping higher amounts of snow. This was hinted at all week, but in all honesty, it still doesn't change the fact that many in our area did not expect to see this. Check out the previous posts from Friday and Thursday, when we committed to keeping the storm south, but still allowed for a slight chance it would hit us. Well, that is what happened. See the county snow forecast maps in the slide show below. Check out this morning's forecast maps here.

Consider that arctic high pressure was blocking the storm from the north, and the air is very dry. The storm did win the battle and now all the forecast snow amounts have to be boosted up. The cold air is fluffing up the snow, so that alone will make for higher totals. Typically there is a 10 inch of snow per 1 inch of liquid ration. Temperatures in the low 20s, that changes to almost double. So not much precipitation can result in a lot more snow. The forecast models this morning did average about .25" of liquid precipitation for BWI. That would result in about 5 inches of snow, but the snowfall rates do seem higher. As a result, the updated forecast maps for each area is posted below - thanks to the help of some friends. I have missed this storm being out of town... so I rely on many of you to be my eyes and ears. Oh, and this is your chance to sound off. Post your comments both good and bad. We will read them.

A little over 4 inches here in Severna Park at 2:15pm You were right Tony when you said earlier this week that the models tend to have a glitch and the storm ends up further NW. Exactly what happened. I had a feeling this would happen. This sort of reminds me of the january 2000 storm that caught forecasters off guard.
I have a quick question. Why is it that when it snows the air feels warmer than it actually is. Right now it is around 18 or 19f but it does not feel that cold. The other night it was 25f and it felt a lot colder than it does now. I have always felt this when it snows.
3pm now, started snowing at 1pm - very large flakes (that's not a good sign is it?) and it appears to be approx 3" in Jarrettsville (Harford Co.). Harford Co Schools cancelled all their Saturday activities for today. Make it go away!
This was never an easy storm, and the models have led us into the desert. What a shame.... It was hard to buck the trend when there was such a big difference on the line. The storm may have gotten bit by the full moon and helped the turn north. At least computers prove they are not perfect and we can keep our jobs... even though some want our heads.
Just shoveled my steps here at water's edge on Chincoteague Island. I measured an an average depth of 8" here at 4:15 p.m. as the snowfall continues.
Im guessing Justin is Justin berk? :) You need to blog again justin
Gordon...yes, that's Justin Berk. :)
It might feel warmer when it's snowing because the snow is 32 degrees and the air is 18. :)
Wow, with all this global warming, we are gonna freeze to death. Welcome to impending new ice age. With all the lies about man made global warming we will be off guard when the ice age hits. So that's why Bush bought all that land in Paraguay. Well I guess us gringos will be the ones swimming across the Rio Grand this time. Do you think the Mexicans will pay for our health care or let us go on welfare?
Around 2 p.m. I drove from D.C. to Baltimore on I-95: it was by far the worst driving experience I have ever had because of the weather.
Got something to say?
