Still finishing up the Christmas shopping? If the evening's plans include driving, it would be best to postpone those plans for at least one more day. Albuquerque and the surrounding areas remain under a Winter Weather Warning until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, December 19, 2011 with predicted snow accumulations of three to six inches.
Some areas are currently experiencing drizzle or freezing drizzle. In Rio Rancho, there seems to be a mix of rain and snow on the roads. This is also patches of fog in some areas. These combined weather conditions are leading to icy patches on the roads, as well as water and slush. Updated road conditions can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.
The snow will continue until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, then turn to rain once more. Eventually, the sunshine will return on Tuesday afternoon with a high near 36 degrees. Wednesday will also bring sunshine and a high of 41 with a low of 25 on Wednesday night.
On Thursday the snow may return, but there's only a 10% chance for both day and night time hours, with a high of 39 during the day and low of 22 Thursday night.
These changes in temperatures throughout the week could create hazardous weather conditions as the snow melts, then freezes again coinciding with the rise and drop in temperatures. This will obviously not keep drivers off the roads as they prepare for the holidays so it's wise to be prepared. Drivers may encounter heavier than usual traffic conditions as vehicles will be moving slower to accomodate these road conditions.
This is not a good time to beat the rest of the shoppers to the stores. The bargains will still be there when you arrive safely. Drive slowly, carefully, and wear your seatbelts!
