Today will be another blazing hot day across the Capital Region of Albany and upstate New York, as high temperatures will soar into the lower to mid 90's under strong high pressure. Humidity levels will be uncomfortable as well, which will make it feel even hotter. An air quality alert has been issued by the National Weather Service from 11 am to 11 pm EDT for the entire region, due to the stagnant air collecting lots of pollution particles. Sensitive groups of people should limit outdoor exposure today.

Tomorrow will be the last day of our heat wave, as we make another run to the lower 90's with clouds increasing late in the day, especially to the south and east. On Friday, a strong cold front will approach from our west and Hurricane Earl will pass to our east just off the New England coast, bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. High temperatures on Friday will be slightly cooler in the mid 80's.

After the cold front passage, Hurricane Earl will be pushed out to sea and a cool and refreshing air mass will be ushered into our region for Saturday and last through the holiday weekend. Temperatures will be cool in the low to mid 70's under mostly sunny skies right through early next week.

In the tropics, Hurricane Earl is now a category 3 storm with winds of 125 mph and a minimum central pressure of 943 millibars. No further significant strengthening is forecast, and Earl is expected to pass east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina early on Friday, where hurricane warnings are now in effect.

Earl will then begin to weaken and accelerate off to the northeast, passing just east of Cape Cod and then into the Canadian maritimes. All areas along the east coast north of South Carolina should monitor the progress of Earl and make any necessary preparations for a possible hurricane landfall. Stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center for the latest information.

Tropical Storm Fiona has strengthened behind Earl and will pass by the northern Leeward Islands later today. Fiona is expected to remain a tropical storm and is not expected to affect any parts of the United States as of right now. Another tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic behind Fiona could develop into a tropical depression later today.

    Dear Albany Weather Examiner,
Please keep your heat and humidity in Albany. We do not want it in Buffalo. We are 400 miles from New York City, you're much closer. You keep all that icky sticky weather. We would like our temperatures back in the low to mid-70s and the low humidity back. It is, after all, September!
    Sincerely,
    Rachael Monaco

This is one of those times when I say, "I can't wait for the weekend" when I really mean it. I'm hoping for cooler temperatures and nice weather for Labor Day Weekend.
