Baby Water 101: Is fluoride in baby nursery water safe for infant formula and newborns?

Babies under six months of age should not be given spring water, nursery water, well water, bottled water, or tap water unless parents are absolutely sure the levels of nitrates, lead, arsenic, and fluoride are safe. Other contaminants from water pollution can be harmful to newborns, as well. Due to immature immune systems, babies are more susceptible to contaminants in drinking water than the kids and adults.

Babies and Fluoride Dosage
According to Dr. William Hirzy, Vice President of the EPA employee union, the blood-brain barrier in infants is not fully developed, so fluoride dosage has more toxic effect and may contribute to lower IQ in children. (interview segment in the brilliant and thorough 28-minute video, Professional Perspectives on Water Fluoridation)

Dr. Vyvyan Howard, a Fetal Patho-Toxicologist, states, “there’s lots of epidemiological evidence now that effects the intelligence of the child … [studies] coming out of China … and that’s been reviewed by the National Academy of Sciences…” (Professional Perspectives on Water Fluoridation)

In an interview concerning her review of the toxicological literature on fluoride with Michael Connett, Dr. Kathleen M. Thiessen explains that since infants get all of their nutrition from fluid consumption, “the exposure of fluoride per unit body weight in an infant is large… We know that some of those exposure Fluoride Harmful to Babieslevels will occur extremely easily in the very young.”

Dr. Thiessen asserts, “It's just not wise to do it.”

Too Much Fluoride is a Bad Thing, Especially for Babies

Environmental Working Group (EWG) published an article entitled, “Fluoride in Water May Harm Your Baby’s Teeth” This article advocates reverse osmosis water for reducing fluoride exposure.

“A recent investigation by the EWG found that over-exposure to fluoride among infants is a widespread problem in most major American cities. EWG's study found that, on any given day, up to 60% of formula-fed babies in US cities were exceeding the Institute of Medicine's "upper tolerable" limit for fluoride.” (“New Fluoride Warning for Infants,” an article in Mothering Magazine, November, 2006)

Is the health of your baby worth the investigation and the research? There are lots of studies and research available on the Fluoride Action Network, and the Environmental Working Group websites.

Thank you for publishing this. Even though the FTC says that fluoridated water cannot be marketed towards infants, Nursery Water thumbs its nose at the law and continues to do so

I don't know why the FTC doesn't do something about it.

Even the ADA warns that young children should not consume fluoride. Of course they don't issue public warnings; you have to go to their site. It seems no government groups will issue anything which may reflect poorly on fluoride use. As usual, follow the money trail (big companies with toxic waste fluoride profits) to learn the truth.

I went to sever dozen stores that sold nursery water and showed them the petition from Fluoride Action Network and had them sent it to corporate and also email the Public relations staff. Only one grocery chain responded and they said they depend upon their suppliers to verify safety and Beechnut said it was good for babies.
Publix right after that also changed the wording of a warning on small fluoride added 8 oz bottles sold for kids. It warns to ask your dentist before consuming water with added fluoride. This is deceptive as brain damage is not a dental area of training or regulation. I think the warning puts them more at risk and I told them.
I had also prior to Nov 9 2006 contacted every infant formula maker to ask on their position. Only Nestle said to not use fluoridated water for infant formula and they cited the AAP american academy Pediateriacs . The other cited the AAp SAYING IT WAS SAFE- GO FIGURE. Nestle will not put the warning on cans or bottles but only if call them

I also told every infant formula company that Nestle warned not to use fluoridated water but non are forwarding that information or the ADA or CDC or FDA warnings. If a company would claim their vitamin C would cure scurvy they would be closed by FDA overnite. This was proved 200 years ago and is common knowledge.
Why is anyone allowed to promote fluoride with no FDA review or approval? Even the CDC in 1999 and 2001 admite4d it is a topical effect primarly. Actually the ingested effect is totally negative and Featherstone 2000 showed clearly no measurable ingested benefit in young kids specifficly as teeth with more fluoride have no addition cavity resistance. Even enamel with fluoride at 1000ppm had no measurable increase in acid resistance.
The EPA unions got it right. Fluoridation is fraud and like thwe 11 unions asked in 2005 Congress must halt fluoridation and give it a goal of ZERO just like arsenic and lead of near equal cumulative toxicity. go to nteu280DOT org to union EPA

Breastmilk (the standard for infant nutrition) contains NO flouride. Doesn't it make sense that babies consuming formula should not get flouride?!?

It's deplorable what companies will do for a buck :(

It would be best to download and print the new health alert. It is about babies and thats what you need, everything else muddies up the point. print it then and post them, send them to the water dept.in the drop box email the mayor, congressman, post on craigslist "rants" Google: fluoridealert/health/babies

I'm living proof of the dangers of fluoride. I was born in Iowa where the water had 4 ppm of natural fluoride in the drinking water and being a bottle fed baby from birth I drank this water for 6 years. I have had a lifetime of depression, anxiety, dental fluorosis, arthritis, goitre, underactive thyroid and now at 54 my teeth have started to break and chip and I have mouth full of fillings. I am now horrified that our state government here in Queensland Australia decided last year to put fluoride in our drinking water. I really feel like banging some heads together.

My wife has had horrible menstrual cycles (sever cramps and emotional swings) which led us to investigate her thyroid. Her panel came back normal except very low T3. She was not out of range but was as low as possible with out being out of range. The doctor decide we should wait and see. We wanted action not to wait so we went fluoride free for one month and her cycles normalized. No cramps or emotional upset. We do not believe fluoride was the sole problem but starting there got us the results we wanted. Fluoride should be re-investigated.

Great article. Thanks so much! I was also a victim of fluoride, and have seen tremendous changes for the better in my health after switching to distilled water and using a non-fluoridated toothpaste. I also had my mercury amalgams removed. WOW. What a difference! It's nice to have my health back again.

We have attempted to notify Kroger Stores of the dangers of providing fluoridated water for infants on its shelves. The reply we got basically says they will do it as long as their customers purchase or ask for the product. In other words, if it makes money, they don't really care. And, yet, my local store has begun to stock less of the fluoride baby water, and they now stock non-fluoridated toothpaste. Maybe the news is finally reaching the front offices. I sincerely hope so.

Thank you for your fine article on fluoride. We have lost 7 horses to chronic fluoride poisoning from their consumption of artificially fluoridated water. Diagnosed by Dr. Lennart Krook, PhD, DVM Cornell University known as the world's authority on flouoride poisoning in animals. These deaths were not because there was too much fluoride in the water but because horses drink so much more water over a shorter period of time making them the "canaries in the mines" with disease that have been growing in humans over the past 1/2 century. Because of this proof, fluoridation was stopped in our town after 20 years of it's practice.

You can see the DVD "Poisoned Horses" on YouTube or on my fluoride web site www.myspace.com/poisonedhorses.

I hope others will learn from these horrific deaths caused by the consumption of this systemic poisonous toxic soup which only contains between 17 and 23% fluoride. The rest is arsenic, lead, mercury, beryllium, cadmium, radio active isotopes, etc.

Thanks so much, all of you, for the thoughtful comments. Your personal stories are powerful and meaningful, especially compared to my "dry facts" and research!

It's good that more and more people are becoming passionate about getting fluoride out of the water. Eventually, generations of ingesting the toxin will catch up with us (in addition to the pop, drugs, sugar, and processed foods).

Keep the comments coming! I read all of them, and I do not edit or delete any of them.

All this is good information but you lack to include one important fact... What do you recommend? I'm all for someone pointing out the problem, but if you can't bring a solution to the discussion then all you're doing is complaining!

Apparently Greg you need pointed out the obvious, fluoride has a dumbing down effect,it also pulls lead from the pipes of older houses when they used lead in the soldier of copper pipes. Do not drink fluoridated water. Do your own homework. I have well water and had it tested. 2ppm fluoride.Spring water is best but its not that simple, find the content by seaching the internet. You are gonna get high doses from processed food because the use city water to rinse these. Eat a bowl of cereal or some grape juice and you are way over the limit. They spray grapes with cryolite, its fluoride and kills bugs.THE MINERAL CRYOLITE. Chemistry: Na 3 AlF 6, Sodium Aluminum Fluoride

To the author and her followers - infants less than 6 months should not drink water for reasons other than arsenic, lead, nitrates, and fluoride. Water is toxic to babies due to their low glomerular filtration rate of their undeveloped kidneys. It causes electrolyte imbalance and they can get seizures, especially if the babies have diarrhea or vomiting.
The topical effect of fluoride can reduce decay rates by 30-70%. Its dosing is dependent on age and a child's risk for developing new decay. I advise you all to search the internet with pubmed for evidence and read the literature yourself rather than listen to Angela Schnaubelt or someone else like me.
However, ff you prefer anecdotal evidence - my brothers and I grew up with fluoride supplements and I have never gotten a cavity. I don't think our IQ has been completely impaired as I am a dentist, and my 3 brothers have all gotten advanced degrees in medical school or MS in aerospace engineering and Naval architecture.
    All the best.
