Republicans trusted more on the economy than Democrats

In a turnaround from recent congressional elections, it appears that Americans now trust the Republicans more than the Democrats on economic issues despite Obama's personal high ratings.

The Rasmussen Poll now shows that more voters trust Republicans than Democrats to handle the economy by a margin of 45-39. In reporting the change, Scott Rasmussen wrote that “ this is the first time in over two years of polling that the GOP has held the advantage on this issue.”

While Democrats still lead on health care, their positive percentage has dropped from have an 18 point lead to a ten point lead in June.

The Gallup Poll shows that Obama himself still retains a 67% personal rating ( Rasmussen polling gives him a 55 percent  approval rating.) However, Gallup reports that he is only getting a

  • 55 percent approval rating on his handling of the economy,
  • 45 percent approve of the way he is handling of federal spending
  • 46 percent approval of his handling of the budget deficit.
It appears that Americans are becoming more wary about the trillions of dollars of debt  being piled on, which the Republicans emphasize as being a burden on future generations. Republicans also continue to talk about the taxes that will be imposed to  pay for the trillions of dollars that are needed to fund Obama's programs. They think that as Americans become more aware of how these will be paid for by higher taxes, the printing of money or an increase in interest rates in order to find buyers for the U.S. debt, they will distrust the Democrats even more.

How this will effect the coming 2010 congressional elections is still to be seen.
