Obama heading for a Lyndon Johnson type failed presidency?

Lyndon Johnson

As the United States goes deeper into debt, the question has begun to arise about whether Obama will be a failed, one-time president.  With spending that is projected to reach deficits of $1.8 trillion this year and $1.3 next year, the debt is expected to spiral to $10 trillion over the next decade.

Now Obama and the Democrats are trying to push through a government health bill which will costs more trillions of dollars. Even so, some believe it will lead to rationed care and extend waiting times.  More important, it has been said to limit care to the weakest and most unproductive members of society.

What may really defeat Obama is underestimating the anger among the public, especially against the

Public Option in his health care reform program. No time in recent history has there been a such a revolt against an administration except during the Vietnam War.

There is an awareness that

  • The health care reform will require that Obama go back on his pledge not to tax the middle class, and that especially small businesses will bear the burden.
  • The Obama administration was considering a 10-percent national sales tax, a value added tax (VAT).

There is a growing discomfort about  Obama  sending another 21,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan where American forces are already bogged down and the number of casualties are beginning to mount. How long the public will continue to support what has now become Obama's war  already shows signs of doubt as the latest polls shows.

The comparisons are being made between Lyndon Baines Johnson and Obama.  Johnson tried to implement the Great Society and continue the Vietnam War at the same time.  Johnson's reckless ambition eventually cost him any opportunity for re-election and he decided not to run again.

To be already thought of a failed president, within the first year of occupying the White House, should be a wake-up call for Obama. If his administration continues to hound the CIA and FBI  and there is a terrorist attack on U.S. property, he will be blamed.  If he continues to listen to those he brought from Chicago to advise him, like David Axelford and the Emanuel brothers, he may doom his chance for a second term. He could bring down the Democrats in Congress with him.

What may  finally destroys the Obama presidency is that he brought the tactics that he learned in Chicago to Washington and that appears to be be rejected by the American public.

    1. I would think it would be admirable for a President to risk his political future for the something he thought was in the long-term interests of the American people.
    2. LBJ's domestic legacy is Medicare and the Civil Rights Act, for both of which he was attacked by the conservatives of yore as a tyrant and socialist. Hmm.... sounds familiar. If President Obama accomplishes anything as significant as either one of those pieces of legislation it will be well worth sacrificing a second term.

Johnson implemented more social programs than any American president. He was the consumate Washington insider and deal-maker. Hardly a failed presidency. Bringing up Vietnam is a red-herring. You're real objection is his domestic agenda. If he "fails" half as badly as Johnson, we'll be better off than we are now.

    Democrats are the real racists.

Remember that the Republicans were the minority party at the time. Nonetheless, H.R.7152 passed the House on Feb. 10, 1964. Of the 420 members who voted, 290 supported the civil rights bill and 130 opposed it.

Republicans favored the bill 138 to 34; Democrats supported it 152-96. Republicans supported it in higher proportions than Democrats. Even though those Democrats were Southern segregationists, without Republicans the bill would have failed. Republicans were the other much-needed leg of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Face it, in nature there is the survival of the fitest, a food chain if you will. When LBJ created his great society he wound up creating a portion of the population that learned to depend on handouts from the government and that is what they taught their kids. I think that was CRUEL. We have a culture in the country today that feels the government is responsible to provide everything, and too few consider the fact that the government can't give anything to anyone without taking it away from someone else first. What is really scary is the huge number of people who think that some people DESERVE to have what they have earned taken away from them.

Yet another editorial and subsequent responses with no facts or credibility. Being married to physician I see first hand that healthcare is BROKEN. Premiums are over 400% in the last 8 years yet insurance companies are declining coverage and procedures. Also who do you think foots the bill for all the unisured? WE DO. (Try to blame that on Obama.) All I ask is do your homework people. Msg to all the Obama haters: The government had to intervene on the economy last year and this year as both Bush and Obama had no choice as the economy was about to fall off a cliff, note the dow is sitting at 9500. But keep up your hate that is all it is and nothing more...You have zero rational arguements...

No cred / no facts: In January 2009, the non-partisan Office of Management and Budget advised against the bailout, stating the economy would recover on its own. And guess what?? It did! The bailout sure hasn't affected a darn thing except to make car dealers temporarily fat. Don't credit B-Ho with the gain in the stock market. Instead credit businesses with guts to forge on in the face of higher taxes, tarriffs and stiff penalties if they don't toe the line on health care.
