Military leaders in China called for the sale of U.S. debt securities on Monday, February 8, 2010 in response to arms sales recently made to Taiwan.
China's state-controlled media interviewed a group of senior Chinese military officers who are also telling Beijing's leaders to boost defense spending and expand force deployments. This is in retaliation for the Pentagon's announcement in January 2010 of the new $6.4 million arms package for Taiwan.
Some observers view any dumping of U.S. bonds as economic warfare. China presently holds nearly $800 billion worth of Treasury debt securities. The result would be to drive up interest rates and disrupt any U.S. economic recovery efforts.
The U.S. State Department has responded by dismissing the economic threat as self-defeating for China. Nevertheless it has added to the tension between the two countries which includes the upcoming meeting between President Obama and the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama.
According to the Washington Times, China's military spending has increased sharply over the last decade as part of a semi-secret buildup with the deployment of advanced ballistic and cruise missiles, large numbers of new warships and submarines, new advanced fighter bombers and various high-tech weapons. Added to this now is the recommendation from its military for China to use economic warfare by selling off debt securities to disrupt the U.S. economic recovery.

Gotta wonder if China is saber-rattling or blustering for no reason. Taiwan is not a military threat to China. China would be shooting itself in the foot by entering an economic war with America. Honk off your biggest trading partner? I doubt they would. But make no mistake - China is nothing more than a trading partner and not an ally. China is America's largest future military threat.
With china's 2.4 tril in reserves, most of which are in U.S. dollars, china's plan for economic dominance has to face the U.S. dollar, two things going for it, it has a high liquidity, and is backed by America's military dominance, they have a good poker face, they are passionate about taiwan, i agree with tex just a trading partner.
Let's get to drinking the tea. How about all patriotic Americans quit buying ANYTHING "Made in China". Start checking the products you buy BEFORE putting them in your cart. If it's made in China find an alternative. They've been knowingly sending dangerous stuff over here aimed at harming our kids anyway. Frankly, we should discontinue allowing them to import stuff to the states until they comply with minimal safety requirements. AND, we need to quit allowing them to buy our debt instruments!! Who're the idiots that allowed this to start with? They should go to jail for compromising our national security.
China can be an ally if we are willing to make it one. China will only be a trading partner if we only want it to be a trading partner. China will be a foe if we make it one as the Obama Administration is doing now.
"Tex" said that "Taiwan is not a military threat to China." to support his claim that selling weapons to Taiwan is OK. However, Taiwan is part of China - a fact the US government also recognizes. Selling weapons to part of country without the agreement from the country's legitimate and worldwide recognized government is definitely NOT OK.
America is indeed an evil country that must be contained and brought down on its knees because its actions around the world are a danger to world peace and stability. The next step would be to break it up into smaller, independent countries and to dismantle its armed forces. I agree with the majority of people around the globe that America must cease to exist as the united states because this would be to the benefit of the entire world.
You see that there is the problem you do not know the definition of imperalism. If you did you would see that America stands for the very opposite as our views are for indiviudal freedom and economic stability and fairness. However, folks like you just slang imperalism like they even have a clue. Imperalism was used to desribe the communal feudalism of Britan's kings and their economic actions towards any party that was a threat. Much like Chinese Communist today. Get real, I used to laugh at kids in school when tried to tell me America was an imperalist and I was the weird one. Makes no sense to me. Imperalism, splitting up America will be hard to do as we are the universal creators of freedom.
Thats funny if they even move towards invading another country that is our ally like they did with Korea or Vietnam. We will have no choice but to take them as an enemy three times will be the charm.
Trading with the enemy act will get China a complete void in all debts to the US its biggest debtor. Whether they use Moaist rebles like they are doing in India or not if they move on Taiwan
So go ahead try and do another Vietnam or North Korea. This time this generation takes no bs from invading countries like unlike the hippies of the 60's and there no understnadng of the Freedom llovers and allies of the uS that where placed in jail for their belief's and all the Vietnamese that had to go on rationing because we backed out because Nixon was more afraid of losing his Presidency. This comment comes late but needs to be heard. I take no sides here because i underastand the desperation of everyone on earth, yet I only respect those who have learned to survive without money period. That is a skill that will put every rich man to their knees if we all knew it and used it. Honestly though, The asset value of the USA FAR exceeds our debt. We are still by far the wealthiest country in the world. Any attempt to attack the USA economically (in any way) will only create a domino effect where the USA will be at the end of the chain. Every country will fall to its demise for for America does. It like trying to control human population by throwing contaminants into the air... That would be foolish as humans live much longer than most any other species of plant, animals, insects on Earth. They would destroy everything BUT humans before they destroyed humans. A senseless plan that will simply never work. Same goes with economy. The US economy stands to take one hell of a beating in compare to AY other country in the world. Even 3-4 of the worlds largest economies wouldn't stand to the one here in USA in an economic war. However, i don't praise America for sucking up so many resources out of the Earth for the last 100 years. We should have made this planet last muc longer before reaching a point where many of us must die. That point is comming, oh yes, it is comming, and the USA would be at the bottom of the chain in any kind of warefare aside from nuclear bombs.
