Time is on my side (AP Photo Elaine Thompson).
This week the Redskins head west to the Emerald City to paly the 2-8 Seahawks. Jim Zorn returns to face the team for which he played and coached. Accordingly this week’s Redskins Game Day Examination is with Seahawks Examiner Ryan Beavers.
Mark Newgent: In a nutshell, what happened to the Seahawks this season? How did they fall from a playoff team last year to 2-8 this year?
Ryan Beavers: Injuries played a key factor in the decline. Without wide receivers to throw to, Matt Hasselbeck had to deal with back-ups constantly dropping balls on third down, then he himself got hurt and was out five games. Without a passing attack, Julius Jones and the running game was keyed on. And without an offense that could stay on the field our defense gave up too many points.
MN: Are Seahawks fans happy with Jim Mora Jr. as the heir apparent to Mike Holmgren?
RB: The overall consensus is that yes, Hawks fans are happy. The better way to describe the situation however, is that it’s kind of an unwritten rule not to discuss it until this season is finished and Mike Holmgren passes the torch. The players and fans agree, are mature enough, and can respect the situation.
MN: Is there any regret over losing Jim Zorn to Washington?
RB: No, I would say its more pride than regret. I’m happy for Zorn’s success, and looking forward to Jim Mora Jr. and what he can do.
MN: You are pretty high on Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford. What are the chances he goes pro after this year? What are the chances the Seahawks could even get him in the draft?
RB: My reasons for being so high on Sam Bradford are personal. I had family that went to OU and am a big Sooners fan. It’s been great to watch Bradford at the helm. That being said, I think he’ll stay with Oklahoma at least another year (and possibly break some records). If he does declare for the draft, the Hawks could have a good chance to get him with their first round pick as it will be a top 10 and there will be at least two other first-round quarterbacks in the draft.
MN: Where do you see any favorable matchups for the Seahawks on offense/defense?
RB: I like Lofa Tatupu controlling Clinton Portis. That will be the matchup to watch. If Portis can be contained, Jason Campbell will be forced to throw on third downs. Marcus Trufant and Josh Wilson can shut down the deep threat as well. If Shaun Alexander gets any play time I’d be curious to see how he would handle the emotion.
MN: What are your keys to a Seahawks victory?
RB: Third downs must be converted and the Hawks need to play mistake free.
MN: What Seahawks player could be an X-factor in the game?
RB: The entire Seahawks squad is a lot more dangerous than their 2-8 record implies, however Julius Jones could have a big game with Hasselbeck and the main receiving core back and healthy for the second straight game.
MN: What weaknesses can the Redskins exploit?
RB: DE Patrick Kerney was placed on IR this week, replacing his spot on the roster is Brandon Miller, claimed off waivers from Atlanta. Kerney led the team in sacks with 5.0 and finished with 21 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.
Thanks Ryan.
My Prediction: A healthy Hasselbeck will have plenty of time to find receivers in this game. However, I think the Redskins veterans find a way to win this game. It won’t be pretty, but since this isn’t a playoff game the Skins will pull it out in the end. Redskins 13, Seahawks 10
