No glimmer of hope for 2009 Redskins

The nightmare will continue

The late great William F. Buckley Jr. once asked the question, “Have you ever seen a dream walking?” I’ve never seen a dream walk, but I can tell you that in the 2009 Redskins, I see a nightmare staggering across the NFL landscape.

After a second loss to a winless team, and two squeakers against similarly winless teams, the wheels are coming off the bus and the season has unraveled after five games.

Speaking of the “bus”, cornerback Carlos Rogers shoved Dan Snyder under it on Monday saying of the team’s woes, "It starts not only with players and coaches, it starts with the ownership. They bring everybody in and they've got last say-so of everything, so that's where it starts, I guess."

The scuttlebutt about Jim Zorn’s successor has already begun, even though he hasn’t been fired…yet. Ten months ago I wrote that I believed that the hiring of Jim Zorn would be “a net good” for the team.” Obviously I was wrong. However, in retrospect, given the decision makers who run this team, Zorn never really stood a chance. If Joe Gibbs could only manage to squeeze two playoff berths working with Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, then what can we expect Jon Gruden to accomplish?

The disquiet in the locker room is mounting, and it’s only going to increase as the schedule gets tougher.

The nightmare scenario for the offensive line (losing Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas) has come to pass. Plan B is moving Stephon Heyer to left tackle, Mike Williams to right tackle and either Chad Rinehart or Will Montgomery at right guard. I’d trust a cardboard box to protect me from a hurricane over that group to protect Jason Campbell.

I know there are examples of teams rebounding from bad starts to make the playoffs, but as I look at this Redskins team, I can’t honestly say that I see anything, which offers even the slightest glimmer of hope.
