Yahoo Sports is reporting that the NFL is investigating charges that the Redskins tampered with Albert Haynesworth before signing the defensive tackle to a seven-year $100 million contract, of which $41 million is guaranteed.
The Tennessee Titans claim that the Redskins interfered with their effort to re-sign Haynesworth. According to The Washington Post’s Jason Reid, the Titans submitted news reports of Dan Snyder dinning with Haynesworth’s agent Chad Speck (who also represents Redskins receiver Malcolm Kelly) and an audio clip of Rock Cartwright possibly confirming to the alleged tampering.
Tampering is one of those open secrets among NFL franchises, like stealing signs in bygone eras of Major League Baseball. Everyone, it seems does it; one reason being that it’s often hard to prove. However, if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell does decide the Redskins tampered they could lose a draft pick and pay a fine.
Losing a draft pick hurts. However, as we know with the Redskins, this team—to their detriment—doesn’t value draft picks like other clubs. Further, when they do show some interest in using the opportunities for value in the draft, they can’t shoot straight. If Goodell wanted to punish the Redskins, letting them keep their draft pick might be a novel sanction.
