Katie Smith scored a season high 17 points and helped lead the Washington Mystics over the Chicago Sky 65-61 in overtime on Saturday night.

Washington found itself down several times in the game. They started the second half with a nine point deficit, one of their largest of the night. The team fought back and tied the score at 40 on a Matee Ajavon free throw towards the end of the third quarter. Much of the fourth quarter was a seesaw affair, with Ajavon again tying the game, but this time it was on the final basket of regulation.

Once the game went to overtime, it was Smith, not Ajavon, who made the big shots. Five of Smith’s 17 points came in the extra segment, with one of her shorts being a three pointer that gave the Mystics a five-point lead. Washington would hold on to the lead and took the game 65-61.

Several Mystics, other than Smith, also had good games. Nakia Sanford played just under 24 minutes and was able to score 11 points and grab seven rebounds. Stud forward Crystal Langhorne fell just one basket short of another double double, scoring nine points with 10 rebounds. Ajavon not only made several key shots, but she also had 10 points and posted an impressive +15 for the game.

With the win, Washington improves to 7-4 on the season and are currently riding a three game win streak. The team’s next match is Thursday, when the Los Angeles Sparks invade the Verizon Center. Washington is holding on to the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and sits two games back of the Eastern Conference leading Atlanta Dream.
