DE Kimo Makaula from Punahou HS in Honolulu became the latest addition to the 2009 recruiting class. The 6'3", 240-pound athlete was originally going to attend UH but decided to accept an offer from UW because of his desire to play in the Pac-10 and live in Seattle. The family has been long-time friends with former UW LB Ink Aleaga. There also was considerable late interest from Oregon, Arizona, and California.
Kimo is a great pickup for the Dawgs. He was overshadowed by all-world LB Manti Te'o while at Punahou but there were definitely nights when he was the team's best player. He is an exceptional athlete who also played QB for Punahou.
I collected three different films of him to watch and you might notice it is of him playing QB. He has great speed for a big man and he is going to be a really good fit.
Most Hawaii kids usually get recruited later in the process after their senior films have been reviewed. The annual regional combines for the most part are in California and Oregon so a lot of these kids simply don't make the trip and stay below the radar. Mainland coaches also don't visit until after their seasons are over. Once the films get out to the colleges in late December recruiting picks up over there.
Kimo will play either defensive end or tight end for the Huskies.

Brockman and Hope named Final Seattle PI Stars of the Year?
Washington forward Jon Brockman, who recently set the school rebounding record, and former Huskies soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo, who claimed gold for the U.S. last summer in a thrilling Olympic victory in Beijing, were honored Tuesday night at the Westin Seattle in the 74th edition of the Sports Star banquet.
Barring an unexpected turn, the Sports Star tradition, born in 1935 as the brainchild of legendary P-I sports editor Royal Brougham, likely saw its final chapter Tuesday. The P-I is up for sale and will cease publishing in the next few weeks unless a buyer is found.
I have communicated with a few PI writers in the past couple of weeks and they are hopeful that the PI will be spun off into a digital format that will continue to live on the Internet. Hearst hasn't made any official comment but they are definitely studying it as an option and attempting to lean that way. The JOA with the Seattle Times may complicate or eliminate that move. When you have two entities awash in red ink fighting for their lives there isn't a lot of cooperation going on.
Ex-UW Assistants
Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell has landed with the Denver Broncos where he will serve as defensive backs coach, the Denver Post reported Monday. Donatell actually held the same position when the Broncos won two Super Bowls from 1994-'99.
Tight ends coach/special teams coordinator Brian White is rumored to be in the running to replace Mike Haywood as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame. That would be a nice bounce for White who was impressive in his one year at UW.
Offensive graduate assistant Luke Huard, who was at Washington the last two years, will take over as quarterbacks coach on Brock Spack's new staff at Illinois State.
