SEATTLE -- The Washington Huskies almost pulled off a second half double-digit deficit, but the Cal Bears came up with enough stops down the stretch to hold of the Huskies 69-66 on Thursday night.
The Huskies had a shot to tie the game at the end of regulation, but Darnell Gant missed an open three with 2 seconds left and the Dawgs couldn’t get another shot off. The Huskies fell to 4-2 in Pac-12 with the loss, while Cal improved to 6-1 in conference play.
Terrence Ross led Washington with 15 points, including several big shots down the stretch and Aziz N’Diaye collected a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
But the Huskies offense looked stagnant at times, and the Dawgs went just 5-of-21 from three. Some of that can be attributed to Husky sharpshooter C.J. Wilcox missing the game with a hip injury. Wilcox is second on the Huskies in scoring (15.5 ppg) and leads the Dawgs with a 44% clip from long range.
Cal jumped out to an early lead and led the entire way. The Bears had a 35-25 halftime lead and were up by eight with 1:51 remaining. But Ross hit two three-pointers and Desmond Simmons added a layup to cut the lead to two. After Justin Cobbs split a pair of free-throws, Gant missed at the buzzer and Cal escaped with a big road win.
The Huskies return to the court when they host Stanford on Saturday afternoon.
