Upcoming events in Washington County - July 2010

Here are some of the events coming up in Washington County during the month of July. Some are political events to help campaigns or candidates, and others are meetings giving the public chances to provide input into issues.

Tualatin Valley Water District rate increase meeting, Wednesday, July 14th, 2010, 7 p.m., at the TVWD headquarters, 1850 SW 170th Ave, Beaverton, near the intersection of 170th and Merlo Rd. . This meeting will address potential increases in water rates only, not sewer or surface water rates. They are planning a 1.7% household increase and a 1% commercial increase, both of which would take effect November 1st if approved. This increase would be to ensure funding for all fixed costs is covered, and to fund the work towards procuring a new source of water.

City of Tualatin open house meeting Saturday, July 10th, 2010, from 1-2:30pm, at the Tualatin Public Library, 18878 SW Martinazzi Ave. Members of the city council will be available to discuss any subject.

Democratic Party of Washington County:

Annual Picnic – Summerfest 2010, Saturday, July 10th, 12:30-5pm, at Greg Mecklem’s farm, 12995 NW Bishop Rd, Hillsboro. He is one of the candidates for Washington County Commissioner position 4. There will be an auction with microbrews, as well as other silent auction items. It is too late to reserve for meal service, but to RSVP for the event, click here. They request no dogs, save for service dogs, as there are alpacas at the farm.

House District 30 nominating meeting – Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 7-9pm, at PCC Willow Creek, 241 SW Edgeway Dr., Room 306, Beaverton, at the Willow Creek Trimet Transit Center. This meeting is to select a replacement for Representative David Edwards, who has decided not to run again due to his wife’s ill health.

Washington County Fair – the Democratic Party needs volunteers at the fair on Sunday, August 1st, from 6-11pm. The location is air-conditioned. At the booth, they sell buttons and bumper stickers, provide candidate and ballot measure information, and have voter registration cards. To volunteer, click here.

Tobias Read is looking for volunteers to help his re-election campaign. They are beginning tomorrow, Saturday, July 10th with a door to door session in the morning, then attending the Summerfest in the afternoon. To sign up, e-mail Justin or call 503-746-9382.

Illegal Immigration and Amnesty Issues forum, Thursday, July 22nd, 6:30-9pm, at the Beaverton Resource Center, 12500 SW Allen Blvd., Beaverton. Scheduled to speak – Jim Ludwick, Oregonians for Immigration Reform founding chairman; Andre Wang, immigration attorney and candidate for House District 50; and Brian Mauldin, Act for America local chapter lead. Republican Party of Washington County:

Grassroots campaign kickoff – Saturday, July 10th, 9am-3pm. They are looking for phone bank volunteers and persons to go door to door. Libertarian party:

State Committee Meeting, Monday, July 12, 6pm, at the Elmers Restaurant, 1250 NW Waterhouse Ave., near the Cornell exit on Highway 26. This meeting will review proposals for the reform plan created at the annual convention, and any committee wishing to present a proposal must have someone attend this meeting. The meeting is limited to 20 attendees, so an RSVP is required.


Wes Wagner for Governor social, Tuesday, July 13th at 5:30pm, at McMenamin’s John Barleycorns, 14610 SW Sequoia Pkwy, Portland. This meeting is for anyone currently working on his campaign, or for anyone interesting in getting involved in the campaign to find more information. To RSVP, click here.

Judical Committee hearing, Saturday July 17th, at noon, at the Hillsboro Library, Shute Park Branch, 775 SE 10th Ave., Hillsboro. Coordinating Committee meeting, tonight, 7-8:30pm. Location not known. This meeting occurs every Friday.

Metro Portland Chapter planning meeting, Thursday, July 15th, 6:30-9pm, at the Bipartisan Café, 7901 SE Stark St., Portland. This meeting occurs every Thursday.

Portland Air Toxins Solutions Advisory Committee meeting, Tuesday, July 20th, 8:30am – 12:30pm, 1900 Building, Room 2500A, 1900 SW 4th Ave., Portland, sponsored by the DEQ. This meeting will recommend strategies to reduce air toxins over 10 years, whether through regulations, voluntary measures, or both, in the tri-county area. Three day Community Strategic Training Initiative, July 30th – August 1st. This meeting is scheduled to run all day, each day, at Reed College. There are numerous workshops, including racial equality, organizing and fundraising, writing, immigration reform, LGBTQ rights, advertising, and voter engagement.
