Today marks the grand opening of the first Walt Disney World resort hotel on the monorail line since the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa opened in the 1980s. Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort is the newest Disney Vacation Club resort, and it is already booked solid for 2009.
Preparing for an influx of Bay Lake Tower guests who will cross a fourth-floor walkway to enjoy the restaurants, shops, and monorail located in the Contemporary Resort, the Contemporary layout has been redesigned and two new restaurants, Disney's Wave restaurant and the Contempo Cafe, have been added. (Guests enter the walkway from Bay Lake Tower's fifth floor and arrive at the fourth floor of the Contemporary.) The Contemporary Resort has also added a new kids' water play area near its two pools so that it remains as contemporary as the new Bay Lake Tower swimming area, which features a large slide with a neon Mickey head.
The Bay Lake Tower is the second Disney Vacation Club resort to open in 2009, following the debut of the Animal Kingdom Villas. Opening two new DVC resorts during the long national recession has been challenging for Disney. Sales of Animal Kingdom Villas timeshares have declined as new DVC members have flocked to the Bay Lake Tower, which is located within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom. Space Mountain is practically in the parking lot of the new resort hotel, and guests have a world-class view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks and Cinderella Castle.
