The Disney World monorail passes the new Contempo Cafe at the Contemporary Resort.
Disney's Contemporary Resort has transformed its restaurants in preparation for the August 4 opening of Bay Lake Tower, the newest Disney Vacation Club resort.
The lengthy transformation began with the relocation of the Contemporary Resort's casual dining area and large arcade, which used to be found on the ground floor. Disney's health-conscious Wave Restaurant now occupies that space.
The arcade has been moved to the Contemporary's Grand Concourse on the fourth floor, inside what used to be a gift shop. Disney moved the Fantasia Gift Shop to the open breezeway outside the game room, constructing an open, Mickey Mouse head-shaped structure that is visible from the monorail. The space formerly housed open kiosks.
In addition to adding a new themed restaurant to the Contemporary's lineup, Disney Imagineers have restructured the Grand Concourse restaurants. The Concourse Steakhouse, which used to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner next to Chef Mickey's buffet, has been replaced by the casual Contempo Cafe. Diners enter their orders at computer kiosks before picking their food up at a service counter. Complete with a drink station, the Contempo Cafe resembles the self-service food courts of the value and moderate resorts. Its fourth-floor location is larger than the ground floor quick service restaurant that used to be located opposite the arcade. The Contempo Cafe will better accommodate guests who cross the fourth-floor walkway from the Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort, scheduled to open August 4.
The Outer Rim bar is still located next to Chef Mickey's, but it has lost some of its original space to stroller parking and Chef Mickey's seating. The popular Chef Mickey's character buffet has rearranged its seating to accommodate an enlarged Contempo Cafe. Although Chef Mickey's used to serve breakfast and lunch only, the restaurant is now open for lunch as well.
Diners at the Contempo Cafe enjoy the best view of the Walt Disney World express and resort monorails, which travel in and out of the Contemporary Resort every few minutes. The Contempo Cafe menu is available here.
