"Vodka Venue" is a weekly feature highlighting spectacular places to go for drinks. If you have any concerns, questions or want to see your favorite venue featured here, please contact csxaminer@gmail.com.

Two of the more recent developments in Las Vegas include an evolution of warehouse-sized poker rooms, and a commitment to resort-style pool facilities.  This latter, especially, is delightful.

Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Tropicana, Treasure Island, the Hard Rock (if you can get in); it is difficult, and pointless, to choose one poolside venue.  Nearly every hotel and casino on, and near, the Strip now has its own magnificent sprawling swim-and-sun complex.  Every one of these has a bar, that you needn't even approach, as each bar employs swimsuit models to bring you drinks.

Granted there is plenty to do in Vegas, and you may not need to spend your day lounging about by the pool.  But if you find yourself conscious in Vegas, during the day, and you are not in a huge hurry to throw your money away, then I recommend you spend your day lounging about by the pool.

Las Vegas boasts some of the best people watching on the planet, and the pool is where it truly stands out.  Bachelor/bachelorette parties, Brazilians, Italians, Brazilian-Italians, droves of sun-worshiping revelers; all the beautiful people who packed the club you couldn't get into the previous night, somehow pull it together, and are now at the pool.  The ten-dollar drinks are well worth it when you consider the free entertainment.  Then consider the ten-dollar drink is forty-ounces of multi-colored, fermented bliss, and what you have is an incredible value, and an ideal way to spend the day.

Recommendations:

  • Get to the pool early - pool-lounging is a popular activity in Vegas, and if you delay, you won't get a chaise.
  • Consume with caution - the Vegas sun beats down with a sadistic intensity, and drinking beneath it can go from pleasurable to perilous within the span of a single Long Island Ice Tea.
  • Be careful with your drink when seeking sanctuary in the water - submerging yourself in the pool is a perfect way to beat the heat, and a perfect way to ruin the ten-dollar drink you forgot you were holding.

Coming this week: Ask Mr. Boston - America's favorite drinks, and the Friday drink special - Dirty Vodka Martini.  And see last week's Vodka Venue - The Afterdeck Bar, Louies Backyard, Key West.

I mostly agree with you, but I wish some of the hotels you mentioned would stop adding the onerous "Resort Fee" to my hotel bill for the privilege of using these "magnificent complexes".

you are correct 14E, I try not to stay where these fees are charged, or where I have to wait in line (read Hard Rock).

i love the pool at the tropicana. the pool, the bar, the waterfall, the football sized cocktails, the ambitious drunk girls swimming in the pool and swim up black jack table? well, need i say more?

the Tropicana pool is one of the finest. i had rather a dubious experience there, however, due largely to the football drink, and if you are someone i know, 4DB, then i will get you for this...
