Iowa City, Iowa -- Virginia Tech got balanced scoring, committed a season-low five turnovers, and 16 points off the bench Tuesday night as the Hokies (5-1) held off Iowa (2-5), 70-64, to even the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at three games each.
Junior guard Malcolm Delaney, the ACC's top returning scorer, led the Hokies for the fifth time in six games with 18 points. Junior Terrell Bell added a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while sophomore forward Victor Davila added 10.
Junior forward Jeff Allen, normally a starter, began the game on the bench, but still played 35 minutes and added 10 points, five rebounds and a steal. True freshman guard Ben Boggs hit two big three pointers in the first half to power the Hokies to a 34-28 halftime lead.
The Hawkeyes, which have struggled this season, jumped out to an 8-1 lead behind a pair of Anthony Tucker three-pointers and a Jarryd Cole layup. Tech head coach Seth Greenberg called a 30-second timeout just 1:22 into the game, but it seemed to work to calm his team down.
The Hokies started chipping away at the lead. A 7-0 run by Tech tied the game at 13. Iowa's Devan Bawinkel hit a three at the midway point of the first half to put the Hawkeyes in front, 20-15. The Hokies answered with a 10-0 run to take a 25-20 lead.
The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half before the Hokies took a 34-28 lead into the half.
Virginia Tech pushed its lead to 10 early in the second half, but the Hawkeyes managed to whittle away at it until a Cole layup with 6:27 left put the home team in front 54-53.
But Bell scored six of his 13 points down the stretch and junior Dorenzo Hudson drained a clutch three to secure the six-point win for the visiting team.
Tucker led the Hawkeyes with 24 points, while Cole was the only other Iowa player to score in double digits with 10.
The Hokies return to the court Sunday, Dec. 6, when they host Georgia at 3:30 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
