A new survey by Pew Research Center seems to indicate that young people are more fond of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Eagles and even Frank Sinatra than they are of Madonna, Nirvana and Kanye West.
Titled "Forty Years After Woodstock, A Gentler Generation Gap," it says that despite the big differences between younger and older adults in their values, use of technology, work ethic, and respect and tolerance for others, this modern generation gap is more subdued than the one that raged in the 1960s. As the survey says, the generations appear to have found a way to disagree without being disagreeable.
While rock 'n' roll was a big source of conflict in many homes in the '60s, today 65% of respondents say they listen to rock either often or sometimes.
Even more interesting is who they listen to. Topping the first five spots were the Beatles, the Eagles, Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley. Next comes the Stones, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Carrie Underwood and Garth Brooks.
Among all the various age groups, the Beatles place in the top five among each, placing second among ages 16-29, third among 30-49, first among 50-64 and fourth among ages 65 and older. Madonna placed 17th among the youngest group and no higher than 10th in any group. Kanye West placed fifth among ages 16-29.
Of course, surveys are all relative and many variables enter into them. But to see the Beatles and other vintage acts placing so well must warm the hearts of longtime music fans.
And the guys who pocket the money from us.

Interesting that Elvis ended up on the #5 position overall, below the Eagles. Of course, fondness as you put it, for a certain artist, or band, is not just demonstrated the easy way, as in which music they listen to. Anyone can go to a local store, and buy their albums, let alone sit on a computer and download their favourite songs, from the favourite artists. Fondness can also be demonstrated by asking fans whether they will be willing to attend a get together concert by their favourite band. However, real fondness and commitment can be measured first, by asking ask them who they would have rather meet. If yes, then ask them would they love to have dinner with that person. If yes, would like to meet their favourite mnusicians, or the home they live in. Yes? Then tell them that, unfortunately, they will not be coming to their town to meet them, and that they would have to travel to the city where that favourite musician lives, and pay their way to get there. How many would?
Carrie Underwood and Mariah Carey over Madonna? Give me a break, I'm a 25 year old male and there is no way I think these results speak the truth (or justify the legacies) of these artists. Carrie Underwood has had a few hits, she's of the moment. Madge has had more "classic" singles then any other female artist. Where are U2, Prince and Elton John? Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross & the Supremes? And Johnny Cash that high? Clearly they
Actually the popularity of The Beatles and Elvis in this poll are roughly the same.
49% of the people sampled stated they liked the Beatles a lot.
38% of the people sampled stated they liked Elvis a lot.
32% of the people stated they liked the Beatles a little.
41% of the people sampled stated they liked Elvis a little.
11% of the people sampled stated they dislikedthe Beatles.
14% of the people sampled stated they disliked Elvis.
So 81% of the people sampled liked The Beatles to some degree and 79% liked Elvis to some degree.
It must also be taken into account that 1815 people do NOT represent the views of the population of the U.S.A.
MADONNA IS #1 AND ALWAYS WILL BE!
HOW DARE YOU SLAM THE QUEEN OF POP LIKE THIS!
Lol at tshore, how is it insulting Madonna? It's research on who is the most popular.
Isnt it ironic that a "jazz singer" who was born in 1915, began his career during the Depression Era of the 1930's, and died over 10 years ago holds the number 5 overall position (37%) on a PEW most-liked musical artist survey.
To think that more than 1 out of every 3 people surveyed called Frank Sinatra their favorite musical artist is a testament to his enduring legacy. His over 1400 recordings remain the greatest musical body of work of any perfomer bar none !
Just go out side tday and who will hear his voice...
Keith you're a 25 year old no mind!
"Madge" is an industry joke and always will be.
25 years from now people will still be listening to the Beatles and Frank Sinatra, they will think of Madonna as "wasn't she the "singer" that always openned her legs. Boooooooring!
I think that at last people are starting to vote for real talent and not just celebrity. For example, Madonna cannot play one musical instrument properly. She know about 3 guitar chords. She has a very weak singing voice and can never be compared to artists like aretha Franklin or Mariah Carey. She has the worlds best song writers and producers and musicians recording her music. As for the Beatles, well, they did almost everything. They could play, sing and certainly write. Their genius will live forever. Because they are real talent and not just spice girl or madonna celebrity.
"It must also be taken into account that 1815 people do NOT represent the views of the population of the U.S.A."<<<A poll sample of 1815 is pretty broad, about twice as much as a typical political poll, so these findings are probably quite sensitive.
I think the poll is a close count on how the country thinks
