What is more profitable than a garage sale and even less hassle? No, this isn’t a fantastical riddle, it’s a consignment shop!
Consignment shops have recently been cropping up across the peninsula as the economy has been tanking. Why? Because everyone wins. Sellers make a bit of extra cash by agreeing to split the amount their items sell for, and customers can buy high quality vintage items at reasonable prices.
Unlike an antique store, you don’t have to sell your items for ridiculously low prices. You choose the price you want it to sell for and if, and only if, it sells, you split the proceeds 50/50 with the shop. You’re paying for the window space and the potential buyers necessary to sell, and as an added bonus, someone else babysits your stuff!
The best feature of consignment shops? The stock in constantly fresh, turning over weekly if not more frequently. At my local consignment shop, She Sells Resales (San Mateo), every time I enter I discover brilliant new things. Unlike the local Goodwill down the block, the items are not junk, and tend to be more interesting and moderately priced than most antique stores.
As expected, She Sell’s stock ranges from the elegant to the absurd. An empty brass birdcage, a silky fur coat, several typewriters, a few oil paintings, and ornate furniture all decorate the eclectic shop, making this consignment store a must-see any day of the week for new discoveries.
