The collection of used games from Toys 'R' Us just became much more interesting.
Today on kotaku, Mike Fahey confirmed with Bill Lee, Vice President, Divisional Merchandise Manager, Toys'R' US, U.S., that Toys 'R' US stores would be accepting games as old as the Atari 2600 for store credit.
This move by the company comes after testing the trade-in program as far back as March. Says Lee,"The video game trade-in program is another way we're providing customers with additional value when they visit our stores." He also comments,"This program is designed to make the exchange process completely hassle-free for customers by accepting games from even the oldest systems, including the original Atari 2600 and 32-bit Sega Genesis."
What does the customer need to have when exhanging their games? For store credit at either Toys 'R' US or Babies 'R' Us stores, customers need to provide the original games that are in their original packaging .
While the participating stores will be accepting a wide variety of games for consoles ranging from the Atati 2600 to the Sega Dreamcast and on, they will not be for sale in the stores themselves. Fahey later confirms from a Toys "R' Us representative that, "The games will be collected by a third party that will then resell the games to retailers across the country."
How will this news affect the trading and selling of used video games? Only time will tell. The trade-in program officially launched nationwide today.
