2K Sports and Don King have teamed up to bring us Don King Boxing. This game takes advantage of the Wii remote/nunchuck and the balance board. However, the balance board is optional for this game. This installment features a lineup of boxers including:
- Joe Louis
- Rocky Marciano
- Joe Calzaghe
- Kelly Pavilik
- James Braddock
When I first played the game, I started in the training mode and this is where the title earns its money. You can track your fitness progress and do activities like speed bag, heavy bag, and jump rope. Up next, I decided to dive into story mode which you start as a fighter nicknamed "The Kid". One particular thing that bothered me about this was that your character could not be customized. I don't know if this was done because of the behind/in-body character viewpoint (i.e. Wii Sports), but was odd given the fact that most games have this feature. In story mode, you encounter a number of characters: promoter, cutmen, trainer, and agents (some of which you can count on, others make you want to check your back for a knife).
Overall, the game is enjoyable because you are actually able to physically get involved. However, this title is aimed more at the casual gaming crowd who would enjoy giving their friends a beatdown or two at a party.
