Sony bringing 3D gaming to Playstation 3 in 2010

As part of their turnaround business plan, Sony will be bringing 3D gaming to the Playstation 3 by the end of the 2011 fiscal year (March 31, 2011). This stealthy announcement came from the company’s recent press release:

Expand 3D-related product businesses in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011
• Engage Sony's group-wide assets from content production to display devices and game to make available a wide variety of attractive content and hardware, and drive the creation of new 3D markets.
• Launch 3D-related products for the home, including TV, Blu-ray DiscTM players/recorders and 3D gaming on PlayStation®3 in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011.
• Provide solutions for 3D content production, distribution and theatrical projection to lead the field in broadcast and professional businesses.
• Target revenue from 3D-related products of more than 1 trillion yen (excluding content) in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013.

Sony has been showing off 3D gaming on the platform recently with Gran Turismo 5 and Wipeout HD. So this announcement should come at no surprise.

Update: In their presentation slides, Sony revealed that the 3D technology will come via a firmware update to all Playstation 3 units sometime in 2010.

just a side note. I've worked on several 3D productions, including the ESPN Extreme Sports movie. It turns out that if you've bought a DLP within the last couple of years, it is already 3D enabled. A lot of the companies don't advertise it because at this point it's not a selling point. But apparently there are already over 3 million US households that have 3D ready TVs.

might want to get your article consistent. title says bringing 3D gaming to ps3 in 2010, and then the first line of the article says .... by end of fiscal year 2011 (ie March 2011). WHY STATE 2010 THEN SAY SOMETHING ELSE..

try reading your article before publishing it !!

That may be true but the PS3 doesn't seem to use the TV, it uses the "PS3 eye" camera to detect the viewing angle of the player and it adjusts the perspective through software to suit the players position in relation to the screen so that every tv can handle it. It will also make real time adjustments which give it a feeling of bing true 3D when it is really just a 2D image you are still looking at.

This is one of the biggest news items ever for PS3. I don't know why people aren't bouncing off their ceilings over this! I am psyched, 3D gaming. How sick is that!!!

if you dont need a 3D tv for it than it will be a massive success.
if you do need a 3D tv for it than it will be a massive FLOP!
most people have just bought new tvs and cant afford to buy a new tv.
especially if the trend between CRT to plasma to LCD to LEDs continues.
every single time a new tech comes out its at least 1500 bucks more expensive than previous models.
LEDs for example, a 40 inch 1080P LED samsung tv 3700 bucks.
40 inch 1080P LCD samsung TV 2000 bucks.
everything exactly the same only difference being ones using LCD and ones using LED.
LEDs are better but no where near 1500 + bucks better.
its going to be a long, long, long time till the majority have a 3D compatible tv, probably wont happen till 2015 so whats the point?
the worlds going to end in 3 years anyway ;)
