The Nintendo Wii.
Famitsu has revealed the life-to-date sales figures for the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii in Japan as of December 13th. The Nintendo has sold 9,048,012 units so far while the Playstation 3 managed to accumulate 4,020,563 units sold.
The Playstation 3 launched in Japan on November 11, 2006. The Nintendo Wii came out about a month later on December 2. Despite that, the Nintendo Wii managed to more than double the Playstation 3 in hardware sales in Japan.
On a related note, a leak of the latest Famitsu weekly sales report has revealed that the Nintendo Wii sold 142,000 units while the Playstation 3 sold 76,000 units from December 7th to the 13th.

The Wii may be in the lead right now but the PS3 will reduce that gap significantly off the back of Final Fantasy XIII and next year's release of Gran Turismo 5.

Final Fantasy popularity isn't what it used to be.
It may push the PS3 closer to the Wii temporarily but it will trail back down again quickly. Whereas NSMBW will continually keep the Wii up in sales for quite a while.

and the back of god of war / gran turismo, in eroupe; i can also see heavy rain being a surprise hit, and Modnation Racers selling long and slow; like little big planet. both will sell 3 million before something else comes out tho...

microsoft has ..crackdown 2 in summer and halo reach for xmas.
ninty has mario galaxy 2 in summer and metroid and zelda 4 xmas

ohh, anyone fancy a bit of MAG, 256 players., resistance 2, actually set the record for a console. 64 players on a level at once. 32 vs 32, or all on all. or 16/8 vs 16/8, you could set up what you want.

Famitsu didn't release Xbox 360 LTD sales figures because if they did 360 fanboys would jump head - first into an empty swmimming pool. 360 has only sold something like 1.1 million in Japan despite being out for more than a year more than PS3 and Wii.
Also, to the guy who said Final Fantasy is losing popularity, why don't you try looking in, oh let's say.....ANY retail shop in Japan right now. Every single store is lined to the ceiling with Final Fantasy XIII stands, posters and merchandise. Modern Warfare 2 pales in comparison to the anticipation gamers have for FF XIII.
Yeah, gotta love the Japanese. Ofcourse they got the same sh!t overthere as we got here - all kinds of folks purchasing Wii's on a massive scale, to play a few months or to do some fitn...ah, forget about them, but the Gamers overthere got sense enough to say "No, we don't want your noisy stinkin' faulty xbox360 with it's lastgen tech, monotone gamelibrary, rediculous fees and xenofobe teenage community, we don't buy!" or something alone those lines.
And they're quite right you know, as they are in Europe. PS3, because of the Games.
Hell yeah! I own a 360 and it's the most dissapointing thing i've ever done with my life, even worse than that time i got a boner in gym class while playing Rugby. 360 games are the crappage which is why they don't win GOTY!
