Developer comments on PSN game sharing

PixelJunk Shooter logo.

The Playstation Network allows “game sharing,” which is a method where you can download the same content you bought from the Playstation Store on one Playstation 3 to another by activating your Playstation Network account on the other system. Recently, the Software Usage Terms were thought to have changed the game sharing limit from 5 to 3 systems (this was later revealed to be a small typo and that the limit is still 5).

Dylan Cuthbert of Q-Games (developer of the upcoming PixelJunk Shooter), voiced his excitement when he heard the news on his personal Twitter page:

good news, 3 is plenty!

When someone asked what will happen to the limit if his Playstation 3 broke down, he responded with the following:

if you had a lot of hardware failures Sony are actually quite receptive to resetting the count (if you ask them nicely)

Finally, he added the following statement in regards to game sharing:

running on 3 accounts should be enough for anyone really, and re-downloading is unlimited - the 24hr lockout is fairest tho

Dylan Cuthbert’s latest title, PixelJunk Shooter, just went gold and is slated for a December release.

that didnt answer my question. do the developers care if one person buys a game and lets 3 other friends play it?

I'm sure the developers care if one person buys a game and lets one other person play it. They'd likely prefer a 1 purchase = available to one account / console only system, as that means more money for them.

I take being a gaming consumer somewhat seriously - unlike some other media I won't mention, I would NEVER pirate a video game - but I have no trouble taking advantage of Sony's multiple-console-downloading policy to share games with my brother.

Limit it to account like Xbox 360

if you have problems with your ps3, you can migrate all the stuff you bought on new ps3 because everyting is tied to the account

I'm not sure why Sony doesn't do this, it hurts developers and makes developing for PSN less tempting knowing 5 or 3 people are sharing 1 bought game

Hmm, you're right there. He does not come right out and say that he's against the gamesharing. Although, he is very happy about it going to three, So I guess we can assume that the Devs are against it. Can't blame em either.

Oh well, Dylan - If you read these comments I'll buy the game (and any other PJM content you want to release HINT HINT)

because problems arise when a person has multiple psps and ps3s.

i have 1 ps3, and 2 psps. so theres 3 activations gone. i could imagine people who have 2 ps3s (1 for living room, 1 for bedroom) and multiple psps.

3 would be fine, as long as its 3 for ps3, 3 for psp.

the other thing is that when the PS3 first came out they TOUTED gamesharing. this is the only reason people belive they are allowed to do it. and maybe we are. because its as easy as putting a lock on a the game like Warhawk has. only 1 PSN can play it and only one console can play it in a 24 hour time zone.

you did read that its a typo its still 5 and will stay 5 hell 3 would be dumb i got 3 ps3s in my house and we share games but 1 of my ps3s broke and i had to pay $160 i guess they made there money back for me game sharing tho if it was 3 i wouldn't be able to active my account again only if i get sony to reset it. Also All games you buy and all trophies you will stay with you in your account.
