Nintendo: iPad, iPhone not "viable" gaming platforms

Apple's anticipated iPad went on sell before the weekend and sold over 300,000 units over the weekend. Not only is there considerable buzz surrounding the tablet's potential for digital media consumption, the iPad's getting a lot of attention for the potential it offers as a gaming platform.

However, in typical Nintendo fashion, the Big N is not too worried about the iPad or iPhone when it comes to competing with its own handhelds, including the DS and upcoming 3DS.

Reggie Fils-Aime told Kotaku that Apple "is not having an impact on Nintendo when you look at our business, our volume, our hardware, our software. I've seen data that suggestions that while consumers are constantly downloading Apps, they play with them for a few times and then they are moving on to the next thing."

He continued: "Clearly it doesn't look like their platform is a viable profit platform for game development because so many of the games are free versus paid downloads."

"If our games represent a range between snacks of entertainment and full meals depending on the type of game, (Apple's) aren't even a mouthful, in terms of the gaming experience you get."

Only time will tell of course, but for now, it looks like Nintendo's not too concerned about the iPad.

I like the food analogy. I would say iPod and iPad games are like vending machine snacks. Wii games, are like McDonalds or other fastfood....and 360, PC, and PS3 games are like fine restaurant food.
