Call of Duty's Modern Warfare 2 has been breaking records since it's release on November 10th. Within the first five days of its launch it raked in about $550 million of sales, marking it the entertainment industry's biggest launch in history, according to the Activision Blizzard press release today.
Previously this record was held by Grand Theft Auto IV, for $310 million on its first day worldwide; $500 mil in the first five. Some other titles spanning movies, books, and games that held high sales records within their first five days are Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394 million, worldwide), The Dark Knight ($203.8 million, domestic), and then there's Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows first day book sales ($220 million).
All quite impressive numbers, and all of them quelled by Modern Warfare 2. Here are some other interesting statistics regarding MW2's launch day success:
- More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.
- More than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10th. A new one-day record for Xbox LIVE.
- More than 11 million achievements were unlocked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day.
