Sony: PSN fix by morning [Updated 2]

Update 2: All systems are working again. Full story here.

Update: Sony's Jeff Rubentstein released this official statement just moments ago: "PS3 slim is good to go, older models should be fine within 24 hrs. Leave em off until then." The cause of the problem was the internal clock.

After experiencing some major problems, Sony has been dealing with some major PS3 system crashes for the last several hours. If you haven't turned your PS3 on in the last five-six hours, please refrain from doing so until Sony fixes the problem.

Aside from having PSN not connect to the internet, some have been noticing that the date has changed on their system, trophies are vanishing, and that many of their games aren't working properly. This has caused a panic among many PS3 owners, though. Oddly, only PS3 owners with the original "fat" model are having problems -- all Slim models work fine. With such a random system crash occurring for unknown reasons, many are wondering what is happening and why a strange error code has been coming up.

If your tried to play any PS3 or PSN titles, you would receive the error code: 8001050F. The detailed explanation given was the following:

Registration of the trophy information could not be completed.
The game will quit.
(8001050F)

After calling Sony's technical support and speaking to one of their representatives, we were told the issue would be fixed by morning and that there is no need to fear about game's trophies or save data, so it's safe to assume these will be fine once the problem is taken care of. It sounds like the fix will be made relatively soon and that there won't be any ill side-effects from the bug. What time the fix will go up exactly is yet to be determined.

It's just a server issue. There servers are unavailable for fat PS3s for whatever reason. This includes Sony's Time server for setting time and date automatically.

    There's nothing to worry about.

If I have downloaded games from friend's account will this "fix" remedy the new "copyright error" that now occurs for all my gameshared/friends psn games? I doubt that Sony will be able to fix that issue and if they are unable to I will definately be upset.

@Megamorf: This is not a server issue what so ever. It is a firmware problem, but perhaps worst-case-scenario a hardware error. The internal clock is not displaying the correct time and will not run properly if reset to normal.

You want sony to fix you being unable to play shared games you didn't pay for? What a moron.

It's not just a server issue because offline consoles are affected. It's a firmware glitch is my guess.

    But here's the thing...
If Sony prepares a fix, how are we going to download it?
I presume it will have to be something made available for download on the Web, and then transferred to the PS3 via removable media.

How can it be a PSN issue when it's affecting machines that have never been online? It's ridiculous to take the word of some low-paid phone rep using Helpdesk software to try and work you through routine problems in a case like this. Pretty shoddy work on the article.

It's not a server issue. PS3s that aren't even connected to the internet are having the same issue. Here's my take:

The internal clock is running on GMT. The internal clock is having an issue with setting the date for leap year probably because of a glitch in the coding of the last firmware update.

The strange thing is that PSN content and PS3 games that use trophies don't work, but movies downloaded over PSN and restored from backup do.

Oh as for the article. I have no doubt it will be fixed tomorrow. I doubt Sony will have anything to do with it though. More than likely they're just going to wait for the internal clocks to tick down to midnight 3/1/10 (which will actually be 3/2 for us) which will end up resolving it and we'll see this same problem again in two years.

what is going on with the 8001050F do you know when this problem is going to be fixed or is it simply a time and date issue if it is a time and date issue would it be best to wait till the 2/3/10 or to wait for a system update but how will it be downloaded if psn is down???

Same crap here. Date 1/1 and missing trophies. It can't be due to leap year though can it? The next leap year (when there are 29 days in January) isn't until 2012. Still, I'm sure it has to be software related... obviously happening to many people. :-( Bugger.

I guess today was supposed to be a PS3 day, but then I just waited 2 farken weeks to find a spare hour and this is what I get. Not happy. I think someone else said "Monumental Fk Up". That it is. That it is. Can you imagine if Windows didn't work for a day? There'd be law suits...

Just to let everyone know. I have the original 40gb fat PS3 but I also installed a 320gb HDD last Spring/Summer. No, I can't log onto the PSN, but all of my DLC is still there. I can go onto the internet and my data appears to be just fine, and all of my trophies are still there as well. PLEASE don't freak out about this. There will be a fix I am sure of. Come on, this is Sony we are talking about, and yes I once had an Xbox360 too, so I am not for Sony nor Xbox, I just like gaming in general. Just sucks because I was hoping to play a little LBP and Heavy Rain late lastnight...ah well. Later today will have to do.

Ok first off i paid over 600usd for my system(first generation P3 fat system) and im the one having problems compared to the cheaper version slim model. I just dont see having problems with a more exspensive model compared to the cheaper one, if this is going to be a ongoing thing i want a refund in the amount that covers the difference between the new model and the old model, say 300bucks worth. I doubt buying the P3 anymore first my blueray died in less then a year old with barely any time on it and now the updates arent even compatible with my system causing more problems then fixes. P3 i give the title EPIC FAIL.

  • John 1 year ago

This is epic people, they make something new and dont care about the older versions. Since the slim model is cheaper they put all attention to it since more people bought this version, they rush the patches to fix this without putting any real attention to the older models. Its Epic so be prepared for more problems down the road.
