As we reported earlier in the week, Heavy Rain is having some problems with freezing, locking up, and glitches. In the comments section of that article, you'll find many who experienced some kind of problem. At first, it was thought to be due to the 230MB patch, but it appears that may not be the case after-all. The issue has finally been addressed by a Sony developer on the PlayStation forums. He reassures everyone that this problem is only occurring in a low population of machines, Sony is working on a solution to release to the public so everyone can enjoy the game without a problem.
One thing he does make note of, is do not shutoff the system if the screen goes black. Wait 5 minutes before acting on this black screen and then make a decision from there. It doesn't mean the game crashed.

Hi folks, this is just to let you know that the issues reported in this thread and elsewhere are being looked into. We're currently trying to establish any common factors for people who are experiencing game freezing so if you are having trouble please be as thorough as possible with regards to your PS3 setup - are you using a launch version of the console or a brand new slim, playing in standard or high definition (I'm not suggesting that these are potential causes, just making the point)... any information you can give may help to find where the issue lies.
One word of advice we've had already is to avoid switching off your PlayStation while the game is in black screen as this may be affecting your save game. There have been a few reports of incidents where game saves have taken longer than would normally be expected - and with a black screen present it may leave the assumption that the game has crashed. In these circumstances we recommend you wait at least 5 minutes before rebooting - while it's highly unlikely a save will take this long, it's better to be safe than sorry.
While incidents of problems with the game are very low we're working to ensure that everyone gets the Heavy Rain experience they expect. As soon as there is any further information we'll update further.
The same developer then left this response on the forums offering a possible fix. Remove all peripherals from the system. It may not fix the problem, but it's worth giving it a try.
Thanks for the responses so for, I'll pass these on to the right people to help in establishing potential causes for these issues. Obviously I'll keep you up to date with all further information that comes along, and please do continue to post any findings you have and I'll make sure the team are informed.
One other thing to try, that I mention purely because I've seen it happen in another game, is to try removing any peripherals to have assigned to your PS3 - Blu-ray remotes, Buzz! controllers, guitar controllers etc - while it's unlikely that this is the cause I'm keen to rule out the obvious to begin with.
Let us know if you are still experiencing any problems. With Sony now working on a solution, we should see some kind of patch, hopefully, within a week's time. Once an official solution if released, we'll let you know.

it had some hiccup and audio issues when i first start playing it, didnt think much of it, thought it was sometihng that could be easily fixed with a patch, wasn't ruining the game, but after saving my game my sister got on to load hers up and the game screen just went black, after that i tried to load up mines and its the same problem. really would like this fixed, got really far and i dont really want to start a new game already even tho my current story is going the path i want it to, dont want anything different u know
Well for me, I can only assume that it was the patch for this reason. I purchased the game, downloaded the patch and after it installed it imediately froze ( where the dad is getting out of bed). I restarted and then I began to lose audio and eventually it froze again. I thought to myself "It's got to be the disk" I returned it to Gamestop and got a new disk, but this time I did not download the patch. This time aside from the constant reminder to install the patch there hasn't been a single problem. So try fixing the patch Sony! or Quantic! & stop making ridiculous excuses like peripherals.

some how i got the 'get all endings' trophy before i even finished the game
My game had the issues about on the start of "sexy girl"
I reloaded the level before and the game did NOT make me re-play that chapter. it played the end section then loaded "sexy girl" without issue. I am using the MGS4 Bundle PS3 80 GB on a 720p HD TV with 5.1 audio. I did stop and save / stop playing when "sexy girl" started I wonder if this is somehow the cause of the issue. This was with the first patch installed
I must've gotten lucky, i also had a black scree at first, rebooted click on load and went to continue and it worked again... going on my second play through now
had to put up with this for 3 freaking hours yesterday!
50 bucks says its got to do with the way the game installs to the HDD and recovers that data.
my ps3 was running fine, i could go into menus, sub menus no problems before i installed heavy rain.
than i installed the game, exited once it was done because i had to go to work.
came home, checked my messages and switching menus and sub menus was ridiculously slow.
for example before install i could click triangle and boom straight away the sub menu is up, after install it takes 4-6 seconds to load it up.
just seems too coincidental that everything's running fine without game install, with game install not only does the game not work, now the XMB and menus take forever to load!

If you have problems with black screen after a chapter, switch off your PS3 and wait some seconds, then try it again. It worked for me once I had the problem. Rebooting only the game didn't help.
bought the game, installed it, tried to play it but before getting to the main menu it says registration of the trophy info could not be completed the game will quit. I dont have the internet so i figure it has something to do with that, but seriously that cant be right, you shouldnt need the net to play a console game.
I haven't buY the game Yet , But I was thinkin' Of buYing it todaY after I get paid . Mmm now I'm reallY thinking hard , on should I or should I not . I keep readin' about how its a great game , how its breath takin' how it's this , How it's that...but damn it I just think It's waY to much freezing going and it just might wear out mY ps3....well It's over for me buYin' it....I Guess
my Copy of heavy rain, let me beat the game with out glitching or freezeing but the talking didn't look right nor did the kissing and the game play has this non stop flicker to it. Now i am trying to play it again, but it won't allow it because of this stupid gliching it has when i'm do this drawing thing of a house the pin is all in the air just hanging there and then once hes done with the drawing he grabs the pen in the air and does the art work all over again an then once your wife comes home and your trying to grab the plates it glitches you back to the art work room, then once you try and move around for abit it freezes so it wont allow me to even get to the part where you play with the kids i about to sell this peace of junk
After the PS3 melt down, my Trophies were deleted, and made Heavy Rain unable to play. when problem was fixed, my Heavy Rain saved data was corrupted and I was forced to start game all over again. I downloaded patch just before doing so. The game worked fine other than some Audio skipping here and there, but now 5 chapters in, many hours in the game it just decided that it doesn't wont to load the game. Any chapter for that matter? Yet I could start a new game yet again In another PS3 Profile?
Hey i've loaded the game but when it gets to the start screen and where i have to press x, it won't budge. Why?
