With the success of games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, hip-hop fans have been left out in the cold - until now.
Genius Products have announced Scratch: The Ultimate DJ, a rhythm based music game developed by 7 Studios for the Xbox 360 and PS3; with consultation from hip-hop producer and filmmaker Quincy D. Jones III (2pac, Ice Cube, Beef TV and DVD series).
The game play is said to be similar to those of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but the player uses a turntable controller to play the game. The controller, called the "Scratch Deck," was created by Numark, the world renowned DJ equipment manufacturer.
“We are thrilled to be teaming with 7 Studios and Quincy Jones III to release a cutting-edge game that captures the vital energy of hip-hop culture”, said Trevor Drinkwater, President and CEO of Genius Products. “We’re confident that Scratch will take interactive music gaming to the next level and excite a large and relatively untapped fan base.”
“With the recent success of music-driven videogames and the dominance of urban culture in the youth market, the potential for Scratch is endless,” said Quincy Jones III, CEO and chief creative officer of QD3 Entertainment and also the son of the legendary Quincy Jones. “Having spent 20 years as a music producer for artists such as Tupac, LL, and Ice Cube, it is rewarding to work with 7 Studios, Genius and Genco to ensure that there is authenticity in every detail of this game. Scratch will feature original recordings from the catalogs of many top urban artists and will allow players to re-imagine songs on the fly and add their own creativity. This feature sets it apart from other music rhythm games and makes it a dream come true for both casual music fans and serious DJs/producers.”
Although the track list has yet to be revealed, the game is set to hit stores in Spring 2009. Check out a few of the screen shots:

I would personally like to see a sieve fire with all these interactive games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero. I think that Nintendo has started this craze of creating interactive gaming with their release of the Wii. But do I play video games to stand up and be active? I thought that was the entire point of video games. I put myself in a surreal world by the storyline and the graphics, not by standing up to play a guitar that will give me carpel tunnel in the long run.
I just would like to see more emphasis put on the details in the storyline and the graphics. It is beginning to get out of hand.
this game will OWN the competition. "re-imagine songs on the fly and add their own creativity"? I'm sold.
Wow, this game is a complete ripoff of beatmania
Nobody does research anymore, I am not surprised.
"The game play is said to be similar to those of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but the player uses a turntable controller to play the game."
BEATMANIA - 1997 - KONAMI.
BEATMANIA IIDX - 1999 - present - KONAMI
They missed the boat.
". Were confident that Scratch will take interactive music gaming to the next level."
Eceeded almost 11 years ago.
Granted some of the features for this game are unique and awsome in their own sense, but come on, dont ignore the fact that pretty much any music rhythm game will have been beaten anywhere from 10 - 11 years ago by Konami.
what a bunch of crap.
beatmania and hip hop mania already nailed this years ago
LAAAAMMMMEEEEE
@CC:
Are you stupid beatmania is not hiphop. Beatmania is not scratching. Beatmania is japanese. Ultimate DJ will be a lot better hopefully as far a music go. Also, hopefully "scratching" will also be involved.
"Beatmania is japanese. "
Japanese is the country of origin, not the type of game. " DJ simulation"
Beatmania has a megaton of scratching.
Looks boring. They'll be lucky if they sell just over 9000 and that's all
This looks pretty nice to me.
I definite buy!
you know this is going to turn out just like all of the other guitar heros and rock bands....all the little kids are going to want to buy it and its going to be a big hit. though turntables and hip hop is not really my cup of tea, ill be interested by how this goes.
I was always thinking of a game where you could mix and scratch, but this game doesn't look like it accurately re-enacts anything DJ's actually do. Beatmania and those games are just button mashers that pretend to be something else.
Hey Djs,
Check Out CrateConnect.net
Kids - you're better off buying a real piece of DJ software instead of a game - a bit more expensive but a whole lot more satisfying.
Am I happy about this? As Mr. Horse would say: "No sir, don't like it at all!".
Everywhere I go, when I play IIDX, everyone asks "Is that Guitar Hero?" and I show them the controller and tell them "Does this look like a guitar?".
Fail.
How stupid. Now we have to hear wiggers bragging about this garbage. This game looks bad cuz rap blows. Thats all we need is more little kids thinking they have dark skin...

^^^ you sound like a bitch
I can't wait for this game to come out... It looks amazing! And its not beatmania, do YOUR research!
"re-imagine songs on the fly and add their own creativity"
Don't be haters!
"Scratch players use a realistic turn-table controller, the Scratch Deck, created by Numark, the world's largest manufacturer of DJ equipment, to manipulate music tracks in real-time."
Sounds like SOME people who feel "Guitar Hero" is a part of THEIR culture only are being robbed. What's funny is how the majority of TV commercials, video game, TV shows and movie soundtracks are of the HIP-HOP variety. What's more is, the mass majority of THEIR culture's youth being influenced by hip-hop for more than 30 years...lol...now that's laughable. Sagging jeans, loud rap music in the cars and women with big butts. I welcome "Scratch" and the one the makers of "Guitar Hero" are making.
guitar hero = guitar freaks
rockband drums/ guitar hero drums = percussion freaks
Ultimate DJ = Beatmania
All of these games are simply the watered down American versions of their Japanese counterparts.
"Oh there will be mixing. Oh there's going to be scratching. That's nothing like beatmania!"
The screenshots don't indicate anything that's different from the original beatmania formula. Go play the original and if you still say that this or any other rhythm game in America wasn't ripped off.....you're gay.

There needs to be a merengue rthymn video game.

Do you research.
We never said it WAS IIDX, though the game format is EXACTLY he same.
You can enter a competition to win a copy of Scratch: the ultimate DJ when it is released over at the website for Hip Hop movie "South Coast"
'SOUTH COAST' is a character driven documentary about how a culture as intrinsically American as hip hop has taken root and mutated in a quintessentially British way in the least likely of places.... its seaside towns.
The film is packed full of utterly engaging characters (as well as bigger names such as Norman Cook, Plan B, Killa Kela, JFB, Stig, Beardyman, Dr Syntax, Mr J, Blackgrass and Elemental) who subvert preconceptions of hip hop just being about bling, gangstas and sexism in every frame.
The film covers all aspects of the Hip Hop scene; music, graffiti, MCs engaging in freestyle battles, DJs, turntablism (cutting and scratching etc.) and breakdancing.
The film won 'Best Documentary' in The International Film Makers Festival, and was officially selected for screening at Raindance, Bermuda, Israel, Helsinki, H20 (New York), Black Soil (Rotterdam), De Reel (Australia) and over a dozen others.
This looks sweet! The console is pimp, and the soundtrack has mix master mike and kanye west! PIMP!

this is a joke...as a DJ i cant even imagine how this nonsense will work. i mean guitar hero color buttons for strings 100% makes sense. to cut a record you use a fader, its 1 simple line..why would i want to press buttons to scratch? garbage... and that pharse "the world renowned DJ equipment manufacturer" yea right, Technics are #1 turntable and Rane & Vestax are the best mixers, Numark is the Fisher-Price Dj equipment, they make terrible cheap equipment.
i wanna see video's of the actual controller an the game in action reading all this information dosen't satisfy my curiosity. i want more to endulge my allready exited sweed
stanton are the sha niz vestax are the sha niz i dont know who this fresh1 thinks he is techies are over rated over priced crap they come standard with, wait for it NUMARK groove tools. speak to dj woody dmc winner he sold his gold plated techs because they were crap! stanton str8 150 you'l never look back i swear it, vestax pdx 2000 pro you'l never look back, 1210 mk5 what ever mark your lookin your paying for a name whats bin in the buisness quite frankly i'd rather get some cams or citronic
an dont bother tryin to say i've never used techies i've bin scratching comming on ten years now i've sin em played with em an dogged em because they just can not out match vestax or stanton an for the record numark ttx1 give you more accuracy on pitch control than tech's stronger motors the list is enless mate i could go on apparently the only joke here is you for not broadening your horizons
hahaha stu pots u might be scratching your ass but to say STANTON makes good turntables is just idioc why dont you do some history and check out what every dj's set up is ive been djing since '95, i had me 1210 mk ii since '97 and never had a problem. sory u couldnt afford techs to by them so u think you $75 turntables are good but techs are #1 and will always be.
stu pots. i wanna see video of the controller too.
do you think in the long run this game could introduce a new generation to classics like rakim?

This is bull.
There just gonna screw around and make DJing look easy and make DJ's look bad. I freakin hate the idea. Seriously. DJ'n is NOT just pressing buttons and turning a plasic object. I want to be a DJ when im older (just got turntables... Sadly they were numark, wich is horrible... Especialy since there helping this game...) And this is getting me POed. Its not at ALL like the real thing. They were doing good at first, The guitar and drums work with buttons and the mic is okay... DJing is WAY more then scratching... Whatever... I just had to complain about it somewere...
