The February NPD sales data was reported earlier this evening, and Microsoft's Xbox 360 took the top-selling spot for the home consoles selling over 420,000 units in the month. Interestingly, Sony and Microsoft both saw an increase in overall sales for the month when compared to last year's numbers, while the Nintendo Wii saw a drop in hardware sales totaling nearly 50%.
February 2009 Sales:
Wii - 753,000
Xbox 360 - 391,000
PS3 - 276,000
Notable Releases for 2009:
Killzone 2 (PlayStation 3)
Star Ocean: The Last Hope (Xbox 360)
Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360/PS3)
February 2010 Sales:
Wii 397.9K
Xbox 360 422.0K
PlayStation 3 360.1K
Notable Release:
Heavy Rain (PS3)
Bioshock 2 (Xbox 360/PS3)
Dante's Inferno (Xbox 360/PS3)
While the range of title available are different, the sales each console is drastically different. The Wii saw a decrease in sales of 47%, meanwhile the PlayStation 3 saw sales increase 30% and the Xbox 360 saw sales increase 7%. With the Xbox 360 so late in the console life-cycle, an increase in sales during the early months of a new year is certainly something that Microsoft should be happy about. Even though Sony wasn't the best-selling console of the month, they saw a dramatic increase in sales from 2009, so they still have plenty of momentum for 2010.
The console race for 2010 is still early, but things are moving along. With March designed as a major month for Sony, we could see Sony software chart in the top spots for next month thanks to releases like God of War III, MLB 10: The Show, and the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII.
