Dragon Age: Origins, the much-anticipated new title from Bioware Software, is finally here and ready for immediate download to your computer via online retailers including Steam and Direct2Drive. Bioware is known for creating immersive fantasy worlds in such games as the Neverwinter Nights franchise and Mass Effect. The experience and reputation pays off in Dragon Age Origins, a dark, heroic fantasy.
Dragon Age: Origins is a single-player RPG available on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. The "origins" in the title reflects a major aspect of gameplay. The player chooses a character race and class. There are three classes to choose from: rogue, mage, and warrior. This player character will then begin in their culture of origin and the choices will be reflected in the back-story of the character prior to the events of the game. The player will make moral choices throughout the game that will reflect the unfolding of the story and development of the player character himself. The game features a party system similar to Baldur's Gate in that players may issue orders to NPC's in real time for up to three active party members chosen from a myriad of in-game NPC's. They may also pause the game to queue up special attacks and spells. The game boasts more than 100 hours of gameplay, promising to keep players playing for months.
Once the player's origin story is complete, the player finds themselves immersed in the Grey Wardens, an army tasked with the responsibility for ridding the world of the Dark Spawn, a blight that comes to the world every few hundred years.
Dragon Age: Origins may not be on everyone's must-have list and it certainly panders to RPG fans. However, RPG fans will find a lot to rave about in this immense fantasy game.
