The Wii Sports Resort Logo
It’s the end of July and Wii Sports Resort has finally come out. This sequel to Wii Sports follows in the footsteps of its older brother by representing real life activities, such as canoeing and archery, in a casual sense that allows everyone, whether it be your grandpa or your younger cousin, to get in on the fun. The difference this time around is the inclusion of the Wii Motion Plus, which creates a closer 1:1 experience with the Wiimote. To give my readers a better idea of what to expect from each activity found in Wii Sports Resort, I will be discussing the pros and cons of the activities over the next week and a half. With each update I will talk about 2 of the 12 activities for a total of 6 different updates.
Today I will cover Cycling and Bowling.
Cycling
In Cycling your goal is to race ahead of your opponents and finish each course in 1st place while avoiding the many banana peels, oil slicks and pitfalls you’ll be faced with along the way.
Acting as though your hands are your feet, you use the Wiimote and the Nunchuk to pedal. The faster you pump your controllers in an alternating fashion, as you would when you’re riding a real bicycle, the faster you’ll go. If you pedal too fast and don’t pace yourself you will deplete your stamina, represented by the three hearts in the upper left corner of the screen, and be forced to either slow down or lose your breath, which results in you coming to a dead stop for a few seconds in order to take a drink of water to replenish your stamina and be able to pedal again. Steering is automatically handled by your Mii but can also be manually controlled by tilting the Wiimote and the Nunchuk in the same direction at the same time.
There are two different modes of play: Road Race and VS. Road Race pits a single player against computer controlled AI while VS lets a second player join in the action. In order have the edge over your opponents and claim those 1st place victories there are a couple of guidelines you must follow:
1. Draft Behind Opponents
By following closely behind one of your opponents you can draft behind them, similar to Mario Kart 64, and as a result gain your stamina back faster than you would normally if you were avoiding your opponents. Without drafting it’s impossible to even come close to a 1st place finish. By recovering stamina at such a quickened rate you can leave your opponents in the dust as you speed ahead toward the finish line.
2. Know the Course
Learning each course is essential to winning in Cycling. If you know what’s coming around each corner you’ll know how to approach each obstacle before you even get to it. Knowing when to speed up and slow down is also advantageous. A little foresight never hurt anyone.
My Impression of Cycling
Cycling is easily one of my favorite games in Wii Sports Resort. I’ve played the game to death and have obtained all the stamps except for one…stupid Wuhu single stage course. It’s definitely a challenge to get 1st place on each of the single stage courses, which remind me of F-Zero since you start each of these races in 30th and must work your way up to 1st maybe that’s why I like it so much. The learning curve is a little steep but highly rewarding once you get the hang of it. It’s also important to note that there are a few frustrations involved with the game, such as opponents unexplainably speeding up for no good reason right when you are about to cross the finish line, but this unfairness is forgivable and doesn’t happen very often. In addition to being fun and challenging, Cycling was also a good workout as it had me sweating a ton as I was playing. I highly recommend it.
Bowling
Bowling is relatively unchanged from its Wii Sports counterpart with the addition of a few new modes. It controls almost identically to the Bowling found in the original Wii Sports with an increased accuracy of showing how you would throw a bowling ball if you were playing an actual game at a bowling alley. New modes include 100-Pin Game and Spin Control. 100-Pin Game is exactly as it sounds as you play a normal game of bowling except with 100 pins to knock down in each frame as opposed to the usual 10. Spin Control is similar to the mode in the original Wii Sports of throwing the ball around walls and obstacles except you are playing a real game and given two chances on each frame to knock down as many pins as you can.

My Impression of Bowling
Bowling was my favorite game in the original Wii Sports and it’s still fun in Wii Sports Resort. 100-Pin bowling is a blast to play and the Spin Control mode is challenging. There are a few issues as some of my friends and I have had trouble curving the ball as much as we wanted to. Guess there’s still a few bugs to work out. Overall it works well for the majority of the time. If you’re having guests over, Bowling should be one of your top picks in Wii Sports Resort especially if you only have one Wii Motion Plus in your household. If you liked Bowling in the first Wii Sports you’ll love the addition of new modes in Wii Sports Resort as well as the increased playability offered by the stamp system.
