Target now offering video game trade-ins, too

Not long after Best Buy announced its nationwide launch of their video game trade-in program, another contender stepped into the ring with a trade-in program of their own: Target.

Didn’t see that coming did you?

Partnered with NextWorth, Target is offering gift cards for your used video games. Not to mention game consoles, cell phones, cameras, DVD and Blu-Ray movies, laptops and a host of other electronics; certainly a much more varied trade-in program then either of Best Buy’s or GameStop’s trade-in programs.

So how else does it compare?

Most gamers are aware of GameStop’s trade-in practice: bring in your items to any location for store credit or cash (at ten percent less than the store credit offer). As for Best Buy, those who wish to trade in games may do so either in store or on the website and will receive a gift card for their items. Target, similar in respect to Best Buy, too is accepting items both in-store and via the NextWorth website. But Target's big advantage comes from being able to accept a wider variety of items for trade-in.

However, a larger question remains: who offers the better trade-in value? Obviously, there will differences in offer amounts between each retailer. Not to mention loyalty incentives, such as GameStop’s Edge Card or e-mail offers.

The best recommendation: do your homework. If you want to be sure you get the best value for your items, take a little time and check what each retailer is offering. And do be sure to consider loyalty incentives, coupons, and other offers available at the time. Because with a better trade-in comes more games to play.

And what gamer doesn’t value that?

The author wrote: "Target, aside from accepting a wider variety of items, is at this time only offering their trade-in service via the NextWorth website."

This is not true. NextWorth's website states the following: "The in-store program powered by NextWorth launched in Northern California on August 24, will rollout to additional stores in September and will be available in approximately 850 stores by the end of the year."

There is a consumer 'awareness' gap when it comes to these trade-in programs (Re: "[Target] also is providing a trade-in program that grants credit on purchases when customers turn in their unwanted electronics."). That is, a customer might not get the maximum amount of cash/credit for their gadget(s). http://www.EcoSquid.com is a free site that instantly provides a comparison of just about all the major trade-in sites. @ Chimborazo: Thanks for the heads up! At the time of writing, I couldn't find anything that showed Target stores were accepting trade-ins at the store. And believe me, I scoured that site. I made the correction. Thanks!
@J.B.: Thanks for the link. Good to see someone out there is looking out for others, too. That is, to make sure folks aren't getting ripped off. (He, I checked my current cellphone just to see what I would get for a Blackberry Pearl; highest bid was $21.84....hmmmmm....)
