The power of being able to give away something totally free or exclusive is one of the driving forces behind Gamestop’s dominance in The Detroit-Metro area. Not to mention there a dozen stores that tailor to there particular demographic providing a sort of unique experience for each patron.
In the past, stores would have little giveaways where they would hand out posters and t-shirts to random customers as they came in. These trinkets made shoppers feel welcome and really feel like they were getting their monies worth on a game. Now swag is delivered on such a grand scale it has become the hook to selling some games. Alpha Protocol is a tactical spy role playing game that allows you to fully customize your character and weapons. Gamestop offered a promotion stating that if you pre-order a copy of Alpha Protocol you would be granted an exclusive redeem code allowing you to download weaponry only available to those with this redeem code.
For some this is enough to get them to pre-order a game right on the spot and then others go for the fanfare of the midnight release. The most popular games warrant the ability to allow gamers to purchase it as soon as 12 o’clock comes around the corner and the only way to get yours is to have it pre-ordered. Gamestop in Southfield, MI. on Evergreen and 12 mile road is one of the most popular spots to enjoy a midnight release event. From giving away standees, free demo disk and even hosting small tournaments they make your wait worth while. Gamers from all over the city of Detroit traverse to this store because of the energy the staff delivers and all of the free stuff received by just being a loyal customer.
Not every giveaway is wrapped in a direct sale, some take place just because your in the right place at the right time. Just going to the store and receiving a random game disk is fun and usually warrants a return visit if not to see if your going to get something free but just because that experience was memorable.
