September 11, 2011 will mark ten years since the fateful destination of four hijacked airplanes changed the lives of every American. The days, weeks, months and years following those acts of evil forever altered the lives of our Armed Services and their families. America mobilized to take the fight to those responsible and to prevent another attack on American soil.
Ten years later the battles are still being waged, but thankfully in faraway lands led by our bravest and best. These sacrifices do not come without a price. We will never forget these brave souls and we should do all we can to help their families and respect the sacrifice they made. Ohio has lost 225 men and women while serving on active duty fighting the Global War on Terrorism.
It is with this spirit that the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial was created. The Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial was the first of its kind in the country dedicated to those lost in the Global War on Terror since September 11, 2001. In order to recognize and honor the largest contingent of Gold Star Families, friends and grateful citizens, the memorial service is held annually on the Saturday closest to 9/11.
This year’s memorial service is Saturday September 10th from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Speakers will include: Congressman Patrick Tiberi, Battalion Fire Chief and 9/11 Twin Towers Emergency Responder Jack Riehl, OFHM Founder Jerry Jodrey, Gold Star Father Jim Bernholtz, and Gunnery Sergeant Shawn Delgado, USMC Ret. Of Lima Co. The Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial is located at 79½ West Cherry St., Sunbury, Ohio 43074 adjacent to Sunbury Community Library.
The memorial was founded and established in 2005 by several veterans who had a vision to build a tribute to all of the men and women in uniform from Ohio that have made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country in the Global War on Terrorism since September 11, 2001. Thanks to the efforts of countless volunteers, the Village of Sunbury and many financial contributors the memorial became a reality when it was dedicated on June 30, 2007. The Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial is recognized by Ohio House Resolution 30 as Ohio’s only recognized Memorial honoring all Ohio military personnel killed in the War on Terrorism.
