On the second Monday of each month, a group dedicated to compassionate eating meets at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 6:30 p.m. to share a potluck meal of vegan food and related discussion. The latest meeting of the Meatless Monday group was yesterday, June 14, when members and nonmembers of the church enjoyed a large selection of homemade food and a continuation of their discussion of Will Tuttle's World Peace Diet: Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony.
As the meetings are organized in a potluck style, no one member bears the burden of cooking a large amount of food, nor does it exclude people who could not afford to eat at a restaurant. Also this allows for members to enjoy the culinary creativity of others and try foods that they might not otherwise fix themselves. While these meetings are potluck, they do not turn away those that for whatever reason are unable to bring food to share. The members themselves are passionate about vegan food and creating tasty food that fits their philosophy of living compassionate lives for the environment and for animals.
Last night they continued their discussion of Will Tuttle's book after listening to a brief synopsis of a particular chapter regarding the domination of the feminine and its relation to milk and egg production. While the discussion often strayed from the original topic, it revealed the participants' own in-depth research into the policies and practices of factory farms and societal views of animals.
While not all meetings include a demonstration or discussion, they all involve the eating and sharing of good, vegan food. All those who are open to vegetarian food and a compassionate lifestyle are welcome to join the members in their celebration of the growing Meatless Monday movement in the United States.
