Kids eating healthy fruits and veggies like they're candy? Crowds of old and young alike learning the value of growing organic crops? Free samples of organic soap, tasters of coconut milk ice cream, and vegetarian pamphlets galore?
I got to experience all that and more today during Vegetarian Day at the Spring Valley Library in San Diego County. With sponsors like Trader Joe's, PETA, Tofurkey, Eden Organic, Newman's Own, San Diego Animal Advocates, and Conscious Eating, the event focused on bringing vegetarian awareness to the community. Numerous pamphlets described the positive impact of a meat-free diet on the earth, body, and soul.
It was a small event, with a few tables inside the library, and obviously intended for just a small community gathering. I was surprised and happy to see so many children interested in trying the vegetarian food...and liking it! There was quite a variety of food offered - "Coconut water" juice boxes, organic trail mix, vegan snickerdoodle cookies by Alternative Baking Company, meatless pepperoni sticks by Primal Spirit Foods (think vegan SlimJim), tortilla chips, cheese platters, fruit, coconut milk ice cream, and more. There was also a focus on the health aspects of a meat-free diet. Nutritionist guest speakers were on-site, offering information to the public as well as free blood sugar screenings.

Unfortunately, Vegetarian Day was scheduled for just three hours, today only. I would love to go back and visit again. But Spring Valley library has set a good example - you can encourage your local library or community center to hold their own Vegetarian Awareness Day! There are many national organizations you can contact to provide you with leaflets and information. It's as easy as googling vegetarian/vegan groups and requesting information. Check out my article about free vegetarian starter kits to get you started.

Libraries are great places. Our local one always has some sort of display. Hmmm, I might check out if they take suggestions and if we can have a foodie display here. I'll let you know if I get around to it.
Newman's Own is delicious and it helps local charities at the same time. His company has done a lot for Australian charities. He was a wonderful philanthropist.
