"Lose the Blubber" ad gets Floridians fired up

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is at it again with another witty billboard aimed at turning people vegetarian for the sake of the animals. The animal in the spotlight this time: beached whales.

No, they aren’t trying to find some way to say going vegetarian will help the whales from getting beached, instead they are comparing overweight women to beached whales and urging them to “lose the blubber” by going vegetarian.

According to a post from the “PETA Files”, residents of Jacksonville, Florida have a year-long bikini season. So PETA has decided to put this billboard up for the locals to see that promotes another way to get a “killer beach bod”.

The post from their site states that vegetarians are 20 to 30% leaner than meat-eaters, so therefore it makes sense to advertise a way to lose weight in the Sunshine State, right?  Wrong, according to many.

The buzz on the web is that a lot of people have a lot of problems with the ad comparing women to whales. Feminists all over Florida are blogging their fingers to the bone voicing their disgust for PETA’s marketing ploy. One blogger sarcastically writes “I'm sure that scores and scores of people looked up at that and immediately gave up eating meat. Well done, PETA!” (view full blog here).

Even PETA supporters are speaking up about the ad.  One comment made on the PETA website states "This kind of billboard can only be hurtful and possibly give vegetarians a bad name. PETA is against animal cruelty...what about human cruelty?"

While many are outraged, many others find it humorous and support PETA’s marketing by saying how they have lost weight since going vegetarian. Safe to say, it is definitely getting a lot of attention.

If the sign had pictured an overweight man, I doubt anything would have been made of it.

I will admit that the last thing that I would NOT want to see is someone obese "male or female" in a bikini or speedo's on a beach. It is downright disgusting. I am overweight and theres no way that I would walk out onto a beach wearing something like that. If the government and health officials are worried about peoples health so much, Why not ban fast foods? We are after all known as the Fat America.

Jacksonville is known for its crime, rude people, and bad drivers. This billboard is what offends these people? Healthy eating is so darn offensive! Forget the murder rate.

The only thing Peta wants is to get attention. Unfortunately they thought this billboard was a good idea. I am all for the prevention of cruelty to animals but this is extreme. I think they could get the point across a lot better if they were kind. After all, if you don't want to be cruel to animals, why be cruel to human being either?

So, I just got this report off MSN. If you think this offends you, you should see what the fast food industry is feeding you. No one wants to be fat, seriously! I also know that some people have a medical condition that contributes to obesity. But look people, when car seat manufactures have to make infant and toddler car seats to fit obese babies and children, then I say we have a problem. And who is going to step up to the plate and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!? I too have had my ups and downs with my weight; I am currently struggling to lose a few extra blubber. This billboard does not offend me. I only hope that it wakes up America to the cruel truth.., We are blubbery! I currently live in South Korea where you will only find obesity in the Americans who live here. Koreans love taking pictures with obese people, because they rarely see it here. WoW! That truth hurts! Maybe they should put that on a billboard; “Paparazzi Asians posing with Americans just because we are fat!” Hum! Yeah, tha

Yeah, that just might do it! I am not saying that I agree with going vegetarian although my family and myself does not eat red meat, so what I get from this billboard is – PETA is for animal cruelty, this is what they do, but the message here is not only about animal cruelty, not eating meat to save the animals.., It also a wakeup call for everyone to eat smarter, healthier. So, if this offends you, then you must be among the lazy and just don’t give a crap to be in the best of health not just for yourself but for your family and the friends that surround you every day! I have another billboard idea how about; (picture) “an overweight man in a casket, the pallbearers struggling to carry it. (sign reads) Suicide hurts everyone” advertised by Weight Watchers.
