Takoma Park Mayor declares city's first Veg Week

On Monday night, Takoma Park Mayor Bruce Williams signed a Proclamation officially declaring April 24 through April 30, 2009 as Takoma Park Veg Week.

In addition to recognizing the many benefits of a plant-based diet, the Takoma Park Veg Week Proclamation encourages “residents to participate by choosing vegetarian foods as way to help protect the planet, their health, and animals and to explore the wide variety of vegetarian cuisine offered” in the city. Several local restaurants are participating in Veg Week by offering extended vegetarian menus or discounts on meatless options.

The week-long celebration starts on April 24, and includes a Veg Week Kick-Off Party with special guest Senator Jamie Raskin (D-20) who will share his plans to go vegetarian for the week: "As a lifelong carnivore, I will be kicking off a week of experimental vegetarianism to see if I have what it takes to live on a nonviolent diet like many of the most ethically engaged people in the community. Silver Spring and Takoma Park have incredible vegetarian food and I am going to enjoy a lot of it."

WHAT: Takoma Veg Week Kick-Off Party
WHEN: Fri., April 24, 2009 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
