When Bread & Brew opened up its doors in January 2009, this green certified restaurant quickly attracted a steady flow of customers. Dishing out a wide range of cuisine mostly made from local, organic ingredients and including several vegetarian and vegan options, its customer-base continued to grow at a constant rate—and then on April 22, 2009, it experienced an incredible spike in business.
April 22 is Earth Day, and in 2009 Bread & Brew joined forces with Compassion Over Killing to turn Earth Day into the restaurant’s first Vegan Day. Scores of customers flocked to the restaurant from morning until late evening to feast on a variety of items featured on the restaurant’s 100% meat-, egg-, and dairy-free menu.
Vegan Day 2009 was such a success that Bread & Brew is teaming up with Compassion Over Killing again this year to host another Vegan Day on this Thurs., April 22.
The interest in meat-free eating is on the rise, and it should come as no surprise. As a recent slew of books and documentaries about our food choices suggest, what we eat matters—it matters for our health, the planet, and animals. Studies have shown that raising animals for food is one of the leading causes of both pollution and resource depletion today. Researchers from the University of Chicago have concluded that when all levels of production are factored in—from livestock crop production to shipping animals to slaughter— a vegetarian diet is the most energy efficient, and the average American does more to reduce global warming emissions by not eating meat, eggs, and dairy than by switching to a hybrid car.
That’s why, in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Bread & Brew is going one step further—in addition to Vegan Day on April 22, which also doubles as a benefit for Compassion Over Killing, it’s launching a new Meatless Mondays Menu, starting on April 26. As always, diners can expect fresh and flavorful dishes with a focus on seasonal ingredients.
According to Teri Van Goethem, owner of Bread & Brew, “The benefits of eating ‘meatless’ are too numerous to count, both for our own health and the health of the planet. Vegan Day and Meatless Mondays are also a great way for Bread & Brew to highlight & showcase the bounty of plant-based options in the DC Area.”

I can't wait until Thursday. I'm really looking forward to going to Bread & Brew on Vegan Day!
Bread & Brew didn't seem prepared to go vegan for Earth Day. They still had their regular menus up, quiches on display (and apparently available for purchase), cream cheese for the bagels and milk for the coffee beverages. A good try, but I thought they would have planned and executed it better.
