With the latest Star Trek movie still in theaters and getting stellar reviews, a rash of new Trekkies is sure to develop, which may be a good thing for the vegan and vegetarian cause. If you are not familiar with the television series or the number of novels, video games, comic books, and movies it spawned, you may not be familiar with a species of humanoids known as the “Vulcans.” Above all else, the Vulcans prize logic, and one element of this logic is vegetarianism.
Perhaps the best known Vulcan is Mr. Spock, first officer of the Enterprise. Admittedly, Spock is only half-Vulcan, which may explain this completely illogical behavior:
Still, humans today can stand to learn from the veggie-loving Vulcans, and that is that eating meat is simply unnecessary. Below is a clip from the original series. In it Captain James Tiberius Kirk, played by William Shatner, unintentionally makes a very strong (though, quite overacted) pitch for going vegan—today!
