Ahh yes, baseball. America's most beloved pastime. Between the action-packed game, the crowd's euphoric excitement and the natural lulls of the game that allow for great conversation, a baseball game is one hell of a way to spend four hours.
Until recently, baseball stadiums were notoriously harsh for vegans. Typically, the only vegan items sold were the famous peanuts and cracker jack. Then came along Soy Happy, a consumer advocacy service that promotes and facilitates vegetarian options on mainstream menus. Recently, Soy Happy has been working hard to get veggie dogs and burgers in Major League Baseball stadiums.
On August 14, 2009, Citi Field jumped on board and started selling Yves veggie dogs and veggie burgers at their concession stands. At only 130 and 160 calories respectively, these items not only provide a vegan option for baseball fans, but a healthier option, too. The veggie dogs are ballpark style -- long and lean, and deliver a familiar hot dog taste that's cruelty-free. The burger is also delicious but garlicky (so perhaps choose the veggie dog if you're on a date). If burgers and hot dogs are not your style, you can also order veggie subs, corn on the Cobb, veggie sushi, fruit salads and chopped salads in Citi Field. Also be sure to flag down a roving vendor for a braided pretzel during the game. Citi Field also serves beer from Brooklyn Brewery, which is local and vegan.
