So I got an iPhone and yes, I am obsessed. Obsessed enough to have spent $30 on plenty of screen protectors that I just can't apply perfectly enough. Well, what does this have to do with eating in season in Baltimore? Plenty. While perusing through tons of apps (and I'm sure there is an app. for people who can't stop browsing apps. right?) I found one called "Locavore". Now for anyone who isn't iPhone obsessed, this is an application that locates what state you are in and gives you a list of what is in season and what is coming in season soon. You can also use it to locate farmer's markets nearby and get directions to them! I felt like this was so simple I had to switch to eating mostly locally grown, in season produce. My transition wasn't hard, especially with this app. Now, for those of you without an iPhone you can do this just as easily! By visiting Marylandsbest.net you will get to do the same! The site has a chart of "What's Ripe Now?" and a section entitled "Find Me Local..." where not only vegans will rejoice, but non-vegans will as well. Because although I do not eat meat, I do support those who choose to support (support, support, support) local farmers and the earth's wellbeing! Also, they include where to find local grains, so take a trip for some local bread! Now for the list:
What is in season now?
strawberries, green peas, sweet cherries, black raspberries, raspberries, sour cherries, blueberries, summer squash, cabbage, snap beans, pole beans, and sweet corn
What will be in season soon?
beets, blackberries, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, Lima beans, peaches, potatoes, and tomatoes
Now how is that for some recipe conjuring? Why not use all of these in-season berries to make a smoothie that I wrote about? Why not use cabbage to make a salad instead of regular old lettuce? If you have picky eaters why not puree some summer squash and hide it in spaghetti sauce, or better yet introduce them to some mini-pizzas! Use small slices of squash as a "crust", spread pizza sauce, and sprinkle with vegan cheese! The ideas are endless, but the fact is that it is super easy to eat in-season, especially with things like Locavore and Marylandsbest.org at our fingertips!
