Interview with York Baur - Producer of Twilight in Forks

Twilight in Forks - The Saga of the Real Town

Forks, Washington was essentially unheard of before the Twilight books hit the shelves, but now is a significant vacation spot for countless fans of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire tales. Twilight and vampire mania is among us and by the looks of things, the end is nowhere in sight.  So, along with the books and movies that have put Forks on the map, “Twilight in Forks – The Saga of the Real Town”, a new documentary about the quaint city will be released on October 15, 2009. The film will enlighten all interested on the town and people behind the Twilight books, the city’s surroundings, and some of the unknown history.  Could you run into a real vampire or werewolf around Forks?  Pre-order the DVD today to hear what the people of the town have to say. This is sure to be a great buy for anyone who collects Twilight memorabilia. The DVD can be pre-ordered at TwilightInForks.com.

York Baur is the producer of the new documentary, “Twilight in Forks - The Saga of the Real Town”, and has graciously spoken to me about the film.

Examiner: Whose idea was the documentary and what exactly was your inspiration?
York Baur: My background and my partner’s background is that we’re both Northwest natives and we both grew up in the Seattle area. We have a deep love, and have since we were young, for that area because of its natural beauty, the remoteness and the peace that is out there. So, when the Twilight thing started to come into the picture, my fifteen year old daughter made me aware of a new book called Twilight that took place in Forks. So I got interested in that and as I learned more I realized, as did Jason (Brown, director), that it was the perfect opportunity to expose what we loved about the Forks area to the rest of the world through the lens of Twilight and really share with fans around the world what we know and love from our own personal experience there.

Examiner: Just about anything Twilight related in the media today results in a type of mania. Do you think this might happen with the “Twilight in Forks” documentary?
York Baur:  Well, I suppose that craze or mania around our film would be somewhat our hope because our objective, as I said, is to show the world the real Forks and the impact that the Twilight phenomena and the Twilight fans have had on the town, so I think we would hope that¸ but we certainly didn’t set out with that objective in mind.

Examiner: Will we be able to see any previews or sneak peeks of the documentary before the release date?
York Baur: Sure, we know that based on the last 48 hours that there is a lot of interest in the contents of our film and yes, we will be selectively releasing various clip and trailer items here between now and the 15th so stay tuned. There will definitely be some sneak peeks on that.

Examiner:  While creating the documentary, were the town's people cooperative, or are they getting tired of this craze?
York Baur:  Well, I guess what I’d say then is two things. One is check the film out because a lot of, or some at least of what’s in the film addresses that very specific issue.  But what I will tell you is that without exception everyone that we approached to help us in whatever way, whether it was being interviewed themselves or giving us access to facilities or places or information, was universally helpful to us, whether they had their own personal connection to the Twilight story or not. I think that exemplifies the town of Forks. The remoteness of the town generates a reliance on themselves and on each other in a way that I don’t think you see hardly anywhere, at least in the United States anymore, so yeah it was striking how everyone was helpful and to varying degrees based on their interest in the story. But, everyone tried to help us out with the project itself.

Examiner:  Is Stephenie Meyer aware of the documentary and has she given any comments on it that you are aware of?
York Baur: Not that we’re aware. I think that it may be known that Stephenie has chosen to take some time, and so, we have not spoken to Stephenie during this project.

I would like to thank Mr. York Baur for taking the time to speak with me about his project. It was a joy to interview him and learn more about the documentary.
