Google took to the streets of NY recently and asked the simple question "what is a browser?" Interesting comments about what the people thought it was. See the rest of the article below the video for an explanation of common internet related terminology.
Common terminology around browsers
If you're unsure what a browser is, this video doesn't help much. A browser is a program that runs on your computer or other electronic device. It allows you to access websites and documents on the World Wide Web. Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox, Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari are all browsers. You heard most of these mentioned in this video.
A search engine searches for sites that contain the search phrase you entered. Google and Yahoo! are search engines. Yahoo! can also be viewed as an internet content provider (an ICP, similar to an ISP giving content but not internet service). An ISP or internet service provider is a company that gives you access to the internet.
So now when your friends ask you what a browser is at the next social gathering, you can answer with confidence.

I made the mistake of downloading Internet Explorer 8 when a pop up box asked if I wanted to do an update...big mistake. It has now forced me to go to Foxfire just to have internet access. When I loaded Internet Explorer 8 and then Google, after I click on any site on Google, the little hour glass comes on and flashed on and off and locks the computer up. I did a control/alt/delete and saw that iexplore.exe is running continuously. The only way I can get out is to click on it and turn it off. That takes me back to the desktop.
This is one more example of Microsoft releasing something that isn't ready...welcome to another ME or Vista or a half dozen other really bad ideas.
If someone can tell me how to fix this, I would appreciate it. And no, it is not a virus. I have run several virus detectors and it makes no difference.

Lindy - You can uninstall IE8 with the following steps. If you have XP:
1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Start Add or Remove Programs
4. Find Windows Internet Explorer 8 in the list
5. Click the remove button and follow the directions
6. If IE8 is your problem, this should fix it
If you have Windows Vista, the steps are similar, but in Control Panel find "Programs and Features."
