A winter snow storm on the East Coast has halted traffic, snarled air travel and quickly turned shopping plazas into ghost towns. While this is normally considered to be the busiest time of the shopping season, this pre-Christmas blizzard has kept travelers homebound, flights grounded, and shopping centers and malls abandoned. The snow storm is dumping record snowfalls ensuring one thing: it will be a white Christmas in the north east.
The snow storm is responsible for five deaths and has left many in South and North Carolina without power. Massive amounts of snowfalls left totals such as 16 inches in Washington D.C. and record snow falls across the East Coast. New Jersey met with record highs as some areas saw a record 2 feet of snow, the most accumulated in one day in the past four years. Tony Hake, our Natural Disasters Examiner has done a superb job totaling the amounts of snowfall across the Coast and has created a slideshow depicting the beauty as well as the intensity of the snow storm. Please see below for links to Tony’s articles.
The snow storm has shut down travel and air flights have been cancelled making it difficult for holiday commuters to reach their destinations. Additionally, roads have been closed ensuring that those who intended to journey for the holidays will have to revise their plans. The FAA has enabled a website where travelers may check to see if flights have been cancelled.
You may access the FAA Flight Delay Information Air Traffic Control System Command Center here. The site will allow you to check if airports have been closed or whether flights have a scheduled delay.
Those traveling by car can check the National Traffic and Road Closure Information website for current, up-to-date information ensuring that your travel is unhindered. You may access the website here. You may also visit Accuweather.com for the latest in road closings and blizzard conditions.
